The Income Tax Department has asked those filing returns not to make false claims of expenses and not to understate their earnings. The problems of those doing so may increase. In fact, it has been found that many people are making false claims in an effort to get more refunds.

The Income Tax Department has clarified the matter and said that making inflated and false claims while filing returns is a punishable offence and this leads to delays in issuing refunds. The department has said that the last date for filing ITR for the assessment year 2024-25 for all taxpayers is July 31. After this, the accounts will not be audited.

According to data from the Income Tax Department and the Central Board of Direct Taxes i.e. CBDT, over five crore ITRs have been filed till July 26. The Income Tax Department had recently warned that taxpayers should file their returns properly to get timely refunds. The Income Tax Department says that those who make refund claims are verified. The department makes the refund only after the verification is completed.

Fill out declarations correctly

The Income Tax Department has told taxpayers that filing ITR correctly speeds up the refund process. In case of any discrepancy in the claims made, a revised refund application will be made. The Income Tax Department has urged taxpayers filing ITR not to claim the Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) amount in a wrong source, under-declare their income or overstate the deduction.
