Sougat Roy started his political journey from the Congress Party. He was the general secretary of the student council of the West Bengal unit of the Congress student wing from 1968 to 1970. After this, he was the General Secretary of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee from 1973-77. In 1979, he was the Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Chemicals. Saugata also won assembly elections five times from 1987 to 2009. Since then he has been a continuous MP.
