TMC’s Haji Nurul Islam wins from Basirhat by 3 lakh 33 thousand 547 votes, know about him

Haji Nurul Islam, one of the famous leaders of Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, has won the Lok Sabha election from Basirhat Lok Sabha seat. Nurul Islam has defeated Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Rekha Patra by a huge margin of 3 lakh 33 thousand 547 votes. This time Noorul Islam has got 8 lakh 3 thousand 762 votes. BJP’s Rekha Patra who came second could get only 4 lakh 7 thousand 215 votes. Akhtar Rehman Biswas of All India Secular Front is in third place with 1 lakh 23 thousand 500 votes in this seat.

Haji Nurul Islam, a brocade businessman, was born on 11 November 1964 in North 24 Parganas district of Bengal and has been in politics since 1998, joining the Trinamool Congress. Always in the headlines for his controversial statements, Haji Nurul is currently one of the leading Muslim faces in his party.

Nurul Islam was interested in politics since childhood. However, he started electoral politics in the year 2003 from Gram Panchayat Samiti in his village Bahera. After winning this election, he was also elected as a member of the Gram Panchayat Committee in 2008. Then in 2008, he was elected as a member of Zilla Parishad from North 24 Parganas. In 2009, Trinamool Congress fielded him from Basirhat Lok Sabha seat in parliamentary politics. At that time Basirhat Lok Sabha seat was considered a stronghold of the Left, but Nurul Islam won here with a huge majority.

Did not get Lok Sabha ticket in 2014

At that time he defeated CPI’s Ajay Chakraborty by over 60,000 votes. Although this seat came to the account of TMC in 2014 and 2019, but in both these elections, Idrish Ali and Nusrat Jahan were elected as MPs from here instead of Haji Nurul Islam. Haji Nurul Islam was fielded by TMC in the assembly elections. Thus he won from Haroa assembly seat in 2016. He also won the same seat in the 2021 assembly elections.

Haji Nurul Islam has had a very controversial political career spanning almost two and a half decades. He was accused in the 2010 Deganga riots. An FIR was also registered in this matter. After this he was also accused of trying to protect Sheikh Shah Jahan, the prime accused in the Sandeshkhali extortion, land grabbing and sexual harassment case.
