Three years ago, a woman teacher in Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur got her son married in school. Someone complained about this in the court, which has now been decided. High Court Justice Ajay Mohan Goyal has ordered the installation of two water purifiers in the school as punishment for the female teacher. Justice Goyal said- the school has been used for a private programme, which is against the rules.

According to the information, the case belongs to Sulgawan village of Hamirpur. The marriage took place on 5 November 2021 at Government Primary School, Jahu Kalan. The teacher got his son married in school. During this, the school principal and other staff members were also present. Shashikant, a local resident, emailed the school administration and block primary education department to express concern about the abuse. He also lodged a complaint on the Chief Minister’s helpline.

The Investigating Block Elementary Education Officer (BEEO) investigated the complaint on 8 November 2021 and found it to be true. But then no action was taken against anyone. Dissatisfied with the response from the Chief Minister’s helpline, Shashikant filed an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act to gather more facts.

Shashikant then filed a petition in April 2022, citing the 2012 court order. According to which political or private programs were banned in the government school premises. His petition named several defendants, including state education department officials, the BEEO, the school headmaster and the teacher who organized the wedding.

The lady teacher apologized

Justice Ajay Mohan Goyal heard the case during the hearing in the High Court last week. The teacher apologized for holding his son’s wedding in school. Justice Goyal directed him to install two reverse osmosis (RO) water purifiers within four weeks as a corrective measure. The bench fixed the next hearing on October 18 and directed the retired head teacher to appear in court.
