Mayur Vihar Incident: A hearing was held in the High Court on Tuesday in the case of the death of a mother and child after falling into an open DDA drain in Delhi’s Mayur Vihar. Meanwhile, the Delhi Police officials and MCD Deputy Commissioner also appeared in the court after being summoned by the court. Scolding both, the court said this is a fair case, why not ask the government to dissolve the MCD.

Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Manmohan expressed displeasure over the performance of MCD and its officials. And said that criminal negligence has been shown by the municipal officials in this matter. The High Court said that MCD has become a comfortable club where you go, have a cup of tea and come back.

The High Court said that the Delhi Police should register a case of criminal negligence against the officials responsible. The court also asked the MCD to clean the drains and barricade them. Pointing to the deputy commissioner present in the court, he said, ‘I can assure you that if this person does not come to office, the situation on the ground will not make any difference.’

At the same time, after this, the court said that I think this is a fair case where I will suggest to the government that MCD needs to be dissolved… Is this how it is happening in Delhi? There is no date for the cabinet meeting. There is no date for the standing committee meeting. The court said that if the Cabinet and Standing Committee meetings are not being held, how will the budget be approved? It is like we decide cases without even sitting in court.

Police and MCD-HC should file report within 10 days

At the same time, after receiving a reprimand from the court, the MCD Deputy Commissioner assured that the drains and the area would be cleaned and the dirt removed. He also said that barricading will be done on the way to reach the canal. Eventually the court ordered the MCD to clear its premises and put up barricades so that the open drains became impassable.

Finally, the court ordered Delhi Police and MCD to file a status report in the case within 10 days. The court said it would not decide where he died. It falls under the jurisdiction of MCD, as the job of investigation is Delhi Police.

Mother and son died after drowning in an open drain

The incident took place on 31st July in Delhi’s Mayur Vihar area. Where due to heavy rain, a drain was filled with water. That drain was open. Meanwhile, a two-and-a-half-year-old child fell into the drain. When her mother went to save her, she also drowned in that stream. Both died in this incident. At the same time, a Public Interest Litigation was filed in the Delhi High Court after this.
