Death sentence in Matigara rape case.

A Siliguri court has sentenced the culprit to death in the rape and murder case of a schoolgirl in Matigara, Darjeeling, West Bengal. Additional City Sessions Court Judge Anita Mehrotra Mathur announced the death sentence on Saturday. This punishment has been given after 380 days of the incident. Let us tell you that this decision of the Siliguri court has become more important because agitations and demonstrations are taking place in Kolkata demanding death sentence for the accused in the rape-murder of a trainee doctor.

Let us tell you that on August 21, 2023, a person named Mohammad Abbas trapped and raped an eleventh grade student in an abandoned house inside a forest in Matigara. The minor died due to physical abuse. The accused crushed the face of the deceased with a brick so that he could not be identified. After examining the evidence, the court convicted Abbas.

According to court sources, the sentence was to be pronounced on Friday. The government counsel cited various incidents and argued in favor of hanging the culprit. On the other hand, Fajdar’s lawyer said that his client’s elderly mother lives at home. Thinking of his family, he appealed to consider the death penalty. On Thursday, Abbas was convicted of raping and murdering a schoolgirl.

Rape accused sentenced to death

Public prosecutor Bivas Chatterjee said that the case was solved after 380 days of the incident. He said, “In every submission, I very earnestly tried to convince the court that this is a different case compared to other cases. In this case the culprit should be hanged. We appealed for the death sentence. The court imposed the death sentence mainly considering two factors. First murder and second rape of a minor. Apart from the death sentence, the court has also ordered a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of the deceased.

After the announcement of the sentence, the mother of the victim said, ‘We are happy with this decision of the court. My daughter will find peace. “We had faith in Matigara police station and court from the beginning,” he said. Hope my daughter got justice today.”

There is an uproar over the Kolkata rape-murder case

Let us tell you that the Mamata Banerjee government has passed a bill providing for the death penalty in the case of the rape-murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. In such a situation, the Siliguri District Court has awarded death sentence in the case of rape and murder of a minor school girl in Matigara. The sentence was announced exactly one year later.

BJP has welcomed the court’s decision

BJP leader Shubhendu Adhikari has welcomed the court’s decision. Meanwhile, Darjeeling MP Raju Bist welcomed the court’s decision and said he was shocked by the gruesome killing of a minor girl from Matigara while returning from school. Outpouring of support for the victim’s family and subsequent outcry against the killings in Siliguri, Darjeeling Hills, Terai and Doors led to the speedy trial of the case. Today, the fast track court convicted the accused Mohammad Abbas and sentenced him to death.

“I thank and congratulate the Siliguri Police and the investigating officer for presenting a solid case in court,” he said. I also thank and appreciate the tireless efforts of the Joint Action Committee, comprising citizens from all walks of life, all NGOs, social organizations, schools, colleges and various individuals, who stood with the family and demanded justice.

I Governor Dr. C.V. I am extremely grateful to Anand Bose Ji, who took the time to personally meet the victim’s family and ensured that the case was moved swiftly.
