India-Maldives dispute: Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu came to India to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. There was hope of better relations between India and Maldives. The Chief Minister of Maldives discussed with PM Modi. Apart from this, he also discussed with Union Minister S Jaishankar on Monday. But when Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu was in India, a parliamentary committee of his country announced a review of three agreements, while talks are going on on how to improve relations between the two countries. Former President of Maldives Ibrahim Solih was a good friend of India. He had signed some important agreements with India. But now behind this review, it is being said that the sovereignty of Maldives has been allegedly violated. Not only this, the live telecast of Modi’s swearing-in ceremony was also stopped there.

Anti-India stance in Maldives

According to local Maldives media reports, MP Ahmed Azan said that the National Security Services Committee of Parliament has decided to conduct a parliamentary inquiry to investigate the actions of Solih’s administration that threatened the sovereignty and independence of the Maldives. He alleged that the actions of the previous government have affected the independence and sovereignty of the country. Muizzu’s government announced last year that it would not renew the contract with the Indian Navy for a joint hydrographic survey in Maldivian waters.

Who is spreading this hatred in Maldives?

On one hand, while Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu was in India, on the other hand, the Maldives government was trying to take a decision against India. Muizzu had come to India to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Before coming to the swearing-in ceremony, he said that it was an honour for him to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi. The new term of the Modi government is expected to improve relations between India and Maldives. On one hand, there was talk of improving relations, while on the other hand, Maldives’ government broadcaster Public Service Media cancelled the live telecast of Modi’s swearing-in ceremony at the last minute.

This was Muizzu’s first visit to India after becoming the President of Maldives in November 2023. In such a situation, he is considered pro-China. After he became the President of Maldives, relations between India and Maldives became very tense. Within a few hours of taking oath, he demanded the withdrawal of Indian Army personnel from his country.
