The man-eating wolf hunt continues in Bahraich.

Various measures are being taken by the forest department to catch the man-eating wolf that has become a terror in Mahasi taluk of Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh. The forest department has set up cages at various places to catch man-eating wolves. Nets have been laid in the fields. Surveillance is being done by drones, but the wolf is not being caught. Now the forest department is installing a sound system near the cage. The sound system plays ‘pre-recorded’ sounds of the she-wolf’s screams and howls.

Forest department officials hope that the wily man-eating wolf will be attracted to the cage by hearing the cries and howls of the female wolf and will fall into the trap. It may be mentioned that earlier the forest department used elephant dung, ‘teddy dolls’ soaked in children’s urine, crackers and thermal drones to catch wolves.

A ‘pre-recorded’ sound of a female wolf is being played

Bahraich DFO Ajit Pratap Singh said that this time we are doing a new experiment to catch the man-eating wolf. We are playing ‘pre-recorded’ sounds of female wolves howling and screaming over loudspeakers. Loudspeaker volume is kept neither too loud nor too low. The only thing we keep is that it sounds like a real she-wolf voice. It is possible that the wolf, attracted by its distinct wolf-like voice, may come near the trap set by us and get caught in the trap.

Earlier, the forest department used to make elephant dung cakes and burn them near residential areas, the smell of which makes wolves think that elephants are there. Because of this fear they should not go there and fall into the trap set by the department. They sprinkled children’s urine near the trap and placed colorful teddy dolls in the hope that the wolves would be alerted by the smell and come closer to the trap.

Wolves are being chased away by bursting crackers

In areas where there are man-eating wolves, fireworks are being set off to drive wolves away from residential areas and onto planned routes. DFO Ajit Pratap Singh said that a wolf attacked and killed a domesticated goat in Sisaiya Churamani village of Mahasi tehsil around 4-5 am on Tuesday. People saw the wolf, teams were deployed, a cordon was laid, but in the meantime hundreds of people from the surrounding area reached there and the wolf escaped.

Wolf terror in 50 villages

DFO Ajit Pratap Singh said that the wounds found on the goat’s body looked like a wolf attack. He said that there is a terror of wolves in an area of about 20-25 km. Thousands of citizens of 50 villages located on the banks of river Ghaghra under Mahasi tehsil of Bahraich are in terror due to wolf attacks. Since July 17, 10 people, including 9 children, have died in wolf attacks, while nearly three dozen people have been injured in attacks by wolves or other animals.

18 sharp shooters deployed to catch wolves

165 forest department personnel, 18 sharp shooters, hundreds of police and PAC personnel, revenue and other department personnel, teams of villagers are engaged day and night in the drive to catch the wolves. Senior officials of the forest department are posted in this area. Experts from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and various voluntary organizations in Dehradun are engaged in rescue, relief and rescue operations.
