Asaduddin Owaisi’s party All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), which withdrew from the Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh and gave a walkover to the Indian Alliance, has been defeated in the by-elections. Owaisi has decided that AIMIM will field its candidates in Muslim majority seats in the by-elections to be held in UP’s 10 assembly seats. For this, Owaisi has also chosen two assembly seats in western UP, where nearly 50 percent are Muslim voters. In such a situation, it remains to be seen whether Owaisi will be able to show his game in the by-elections in the Muslim majority seats or spoil the game of other parties?

Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM has formed an alliance with Apna Dal (Kamarawadi) and Pragatisheel Manav Samaj Party in UP. It is named PDM (Backward-Dalit-Muslim) Front. After a PDM front meeting in Prayagraj on Saturday, Apna Dal (A) leader Pallavi Patel has announced to contest the by-elections to 10 assembly seats in UP. No formal announcement of seat sharing between the three parties has been made yet, but the AIMIM has decided its seats to contest the by-elections.

Speaking to TV-9 Digital, AIMIM UP President Shaukat Ali said that the by-elections to Mirapur in Muzaffarpur and Kundarki in Moradabad have just been selected. He said that for this he will be on a tour of Western UP region from July 3 to July 5. Meanwhile, a meeting will be held with party leaders and workers and brainstorming will be done on the names of candidates for Mirapur and Kundarki seats. Apart from this, he is also planning to contest the by-election of Kher assembly constituency of Aligarh district. Apart from this, there is Sisamau assembly seat in Kanpur, where the election is yet to be decided.

The PDM front fielded candidates on 28 Lok Sabha seats.

Shaukat Ali said that full preparations are in place for Muslim candidates to contest by-elections in Mirapur and Kundarki seats. In the 2022 elections, Hafiz Waris contested from the Kundarki seat on an AIMIM ticket and got 14251 votes. Congress got only 1716 votes in this seat. AIMIM did not contest the Mirapur seat, but the Congress managed to get 1258 votes. Shaukat Ali said that both the seats have more than one lakh Muslim voters and our party has its own political base, due to which AIMIM plans to contest the by-elections. He said that we are also looking at Purvanchal, where we can contest elections.

Asaduddin Owaisi joined hands with Pallavi Patel to form the PDM Front despite no candidate from AIMIM in Uttar Pradesh in Lok Sabha Elections 2024. To give a political walkover to the Bharatiya Janata Party, Owaisi did not field anyone from his party, but 28 Lok Sabha candidates contested under the PDM. Asaduddin Owaisi himself campaigned for PDM from Varanasi to Kushinagar Lok Sabha constituency. Despite this, not a single candidate of PDM could win the election, but now a strategy has been made to field a candidate on the ticket of AIMIM in the by-election.

SP-Congress alliance plan to increase tension

The 10 assembly constituencies in Uttar Pradesh that are slated for by-election include Karhal, Milkipur, Sisamau, Kundarki, Ghaziabad, Phulpur, Mazwan, Katehri, Kher and Mirapur. In the assembly elections held in the year 2022, five of these seats were won by the SP and one seat by the RLD. At that time there was an alliance between SP and RLD. Apart from this, three seats were won by BJP and one seat was won by its ally Nishad Party.

Asaduddin Owaisi has an all-out plan to increase the traction of the SP-Congress alliance by trying its luck on Muslim-dominated seats in the by-elections. Out of these 10 constituencies, five seats have a Muslim electorate of more than 80,000 and have had Muslim MLAs at one point or another. SP and BSP are also preparing to field Muslim candidates. Thus, in many seats in the by-elections, there could be a Muslim-versus-Muslim clash, which could benefit the BJP. In such a situation, it remains to be seen what kind of political game Owaisi is playing in the by-elections?
