Hybrid car from Maruti and Honda.

The Yogi Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh recently gave a 100% rebate on registration fees for hybrid cars. Since then, a new debate has started on whether hybrid cars will leave electric vehicles behind in terms of sales in the coming days or whether hybrid cars will be better than electric vehicles for India. What is the whole deal?

The unique feature of hybrid cars is that there is no need to create any new infrastructure for them, as is required in the country in the form of charging stations for electric cars. While it also offers better range than a regular car, it also eliminates the range anxiety associated with electric cars.

These hybrid cars are present on the market

Currently, there are hybrid cars in India, mainly from Maruti Suzuki and Toyota Motors. These cars are actually crossover versions of each other. Whereas apart from these two, Honda Motors is the only company to have its own hybrid sedan Honda City eHEV present in the market. What needs to be noted is that all these companies have connections with Japan, which means that Japan has made a big bet on hybrid cars.

How do hybrid cars work?

Jot technology is used in hybrid cars. In this, too, a battery is connected to the engine of a car. Its specialty of operating in two modes helps in providing a greater range to people. The battery of the electric motor installed in a hybrid car is not charged with gasoline, but works on the principle of regenerative energy. Therefore, existing cars in the market can be converted into hybrids by making minor changes to them.

In hybrid cars, regenerative brakes are installed near the wheels. As soon as you brake, the generated kinetic energy is stored in the battery with the help of an electric dynamo. When you drive a car, after reaching a certain speed, the supply of gasoline to the engine stops and your car starts running on the electric motor. This saves gasoline and you get good mileage.

Will hybrid cars overtake electric vehicles?

Hybrid cars require charging infrastructure or battery swapping. If other state governments also take a similar decision as the UP government, then this segment can get a further boost. If we look at the market trend, sales of hybrid cars and SUVs have also increased in the country.

According to a report by Jato Dynamics, there is a possibility of a 38 percent growth in hybrid electric vehicle sales in the country. It could be 22,389 units in the April-June quarter, which will account for around 2.1 percent of total car sales. At the same time, electric vehicle sales are expected to decline by 0.2 percent.
