Kolkata Rape Case

10 days after the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal’s Kolkata, junior doctors have again announced a strike. Meanwhile, in Kolkata, the Junior Doctors Front also took out a torch rally from RG Kar Hospital to Shyambazar and demanded justice for the incident at RG Kar and Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital. The doctors say that no action has been taken on the directions given by the Chief Secretary as per their demand. At the same time, the RG tax case will be heard in the Supreme Court today.

Today, after the hearing in the Supreme Court, the junior doctors of West Bengal have once again announced to stop work. According to the doctors, they have decided to stop work in Kolkata’s College of Medicine and Sagar Dutta Hospital to protest the attack on three doctors and three nurses after the death of a patient. Doctors also say that the state government has failed to provide them security despite promises.

What allegations did the doctors make?

Aniket Mahato, junior doctor of RG Kar Medical College, said, ‘Our movement till now was focused on only one agenda and that is for the rape victim. It has been 10 days since we met the Chief Secretary regarding our safety and security in hospitals, but no action has been taken on the instructions given by the Chief Secretary as per our demands. We saw another similar incident at Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital. If we find something positive in the Supreme Court hearing, we will reconsider it, otherwise we will appeal for a complete ban. We have organized a public rally on October 2.

RG Kar College Dr. Shreya Shaw said, ‘Our demands have been the same since the beginning of the protest. There are five demands that have not yet been met. We joined our duty thinking that our patients needed us, but meanwhile another similar incident happened at Sagar Dutta Medical College and Hospital. All our meetings with the Chief Minister and the government went in vain. We only want to say that if there is no security then there is no duty. We are keeping an eye on every hearing of the Supreme Court and we have to keep up the pressure. We are confident that the CJI will give a judgment that will bring us justice. We want justice as soon as possible because justice delayed is justice denied.

A bench headed by CJI will hear

In fact, Kolkata’s RG Tax case is scheduled to be heard in the Supreme Court today. Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra will hear the case along with CJI DY Chandrachud. Earlier the hearing of this case was held on 17th September.
