The Opposition was silent on the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) issue after the Lok Sabha election results, but a political uproar erupted after a newspaper report surfaced. The report claimed that Mangesh Pandilkar, a relative of Shiv Sena’s Shinde faction candidate from the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha seat, Ravindra Vaikar, was seen using a mobile phone to ‘connect’ to the EVMs during counting on June 4. However, after the controversy grew, the newspaper issued a clarification on Monday expressing its regret for the report.

The opposition, including the Congress, questioned the credibility of EVMs over the newspaper report. At the same time, the Bharatiya Janata Party targeted opposition leaders on the issue and demanded that the Election Commission should take action against all those who spread lies by sharing the report. The Election Commission has completely ruled out any irregularities in the EVMs.

Mumbai North West Lok Sabha Constituency Returning Officer Vandana Suryavanshi termed the newspaper report as fake news and said that a defamation notice has been issued to the publication. EVM is a stand-alone system, cannot be programmed and does not have wireless communication capability. At the same time, the Vanrai police have registered a case against Mangesh Pandilkar, a relative of MP Ravindra Vykar, and polling officer Dinesh Gurav under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code for taking mobile phones to polling centres.
