Surgeon Vice Admiral Aarti Sarin took charge as Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) on Tuesday, 1 October. She is the first woman officer to be appointed to this post. 60-year-old Aarti Sarin will head the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) for two years. He will report directly to the Ministry of Defence. Let’s know from which medical college he studied MBBS and in which positions he worked before that.

Earlier, Sarin headed the Directorate of Medical Services of the Navy. He has previously served as Director and Commandant of DG Medical Services (Air) and Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune. She is also a member of the National Task Force set up by the Supreme Court to protect women doctors at work.

Aarti Sarin obtained her MBBS degree from Armed Forces Medical College, Pune and then post graduation in Radiation Oncology and Radio Diagnosis. He is a Diplomate National Board in Radiation Oncology from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai and trained in Gamma Knife Surgery (Non-Invasive Radiation Therapy) from University of Pittsburgh, USA.

In a career spanning 38 years, Sarin has served as Professor and Head, Radiation Oncology, Army Hospital (Research and Referral) and Command Hospital (Southern Command)/AFMC Pune, Commanding Officer, INHS Ashwini and Indian Navy Commander, Defence. He has held prestigious academic and administrative posts including Command Medical Officer in the Southern and Western Naval Commands, the ministry said in a statement.

He has served in all three branches of the armed forces. He has a long experience. Military doctors ranging from lieutenant to captain in the army, surgeon vice admiral in the navy and air marshal in the Indian Air Force can be posted from one service to another. He has also been awarded the Super Special Service Medal by the President.
