A martyr’s memorial has not yet been constructed at Nandganj in Ghazipur.
Ghazipur district is known as the land of brave sons and brave soldiers. Perhaps this is the reason why the people here fought for freedom from the British during the freedom struggle. Shaheed Memorial Inter College, Nandganj has preserved this freedom struggle and sacrifice of martyrs. Apart from prominent revolutionaries, disciples of other martyrs have also been installed in the college. The slogan of independence was raised under the leadership of prominent revolutionary Bholanath “Sah, noted regional wrestler Ramdhari “Sah Yadav, Doma Lohar and Har Prasad Singh.
During the freedom struggle, the brave revolutionaries of Nandganj occupied the police station, after which more than 100 braves were martyred by police bullets. After independence, Shaheed Memorial Inter College was established in the memory of these martyrs which still maintains the pride of martyrs. Programs are organized here on Martyr’s Day. As for the Shaheed Memorial, it has been built outside the Girls’ School in Paras Gali, Nandganj, but is now in a dilapidated condition.
Police fired 175 bullets
On August 18, 1942, on the call of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, the revolutionaries here first planned to hoist the tricolor at the Nandganj Police Station, but due to the double maneuver of the then Nandganj Police Station Chief Vijay Shankar Pandey, the revolutionaries hoisted the tricolor. 52 coaches of goods train standing at Nandganj railway station were looted. On receiving this information, the British rushed to the scene and fired 175 rounds at the revolutionaries, killing more than 100 revolutionaries and injuring many. The saddest thing is that till date not even a martyr’s memorial has been built in Nandganj in memory of these martyrs.

The blood of the freedom fighters boiled after the ‘August Revolution’
After the announcement of ‘August Revolution’, the blood of the people of Nandganj area also started boiling. Thousands of people led by freedom fighter Bhola Singh including Jalandhar Singh, Ramdhari Singh Yadav reached Nandganj Police Station to hoist tricolors and raise slogans of Bharat Mata Ki Jai. Vijay Shankar Pandey, in-charge of the police station, pointed at the goods train standing at the station and incited people to loot it. The crowd moved towards the goods train. Shyam Narayan Singh from Mainpur, Bachai Singh from Karanda and Ram Parikha Singh from Balua etc also arrived here with groups.
Cheating firing on freedom fighters
Doma Lohar of Belasi broke the locks of all the coaches of the goods train with a hammer and chisel. Three kilometers east of the station, the railway track was blocked due to the collapse of a bridge. The British also reached the spot to repair it. The head of the police station informed the then DM and SP about the incident in a double move. A heavy British force reached the spot and opened fire.
Roast 80 fighters standing in a queue
Dozens of people lined up and were shot by the police. The death toll of 80 people in connection with this firing was confirmed by Mumbai Doordarshan in a broadcast on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of the ‘Quit India Movement’. Even after such a big event in Azadi, this place is still neglected.
