During the British rule, there was a situation once that Ramlila was going to start on the day of Muharram itself. The order given by the British officer in such a situation is still debated today.

There is a record in the Ghazipur Gazetteer of 1868, when Muharram and Ramlila fell on the same date. On one hand, the people of the Muslim community were preparing to celebrate Muharram. At the same time, there was great excitement in the city over Ramlila. But British officials feared that a frenzy would break out.

The British Collector ordered

In such a situation, the then British Collector Munwar took a decision to maintain peace in the city. When the dates of Ramlila and Muharram fell on the same day, the Collector issued an order that Muharram Tazia would not be taken on the same route where Ramlila would take place. This order is still in force in Ghazipur.

The history of Ramlila is more than 450 years old

This 450-year-old Ramlila is said to have been started simultaneously in Chitrakoot, Ramnagar and Ghazipur by Meghabhagat, an associate of Tulsidas. This Ramleela is also called Chalman Ramleela. This Ramlila of Gazipur will start from September 28 and will last for about 15 days. Around 10 effigies are also made in this Ramlila of Ghazipur, which are burnt on different days according to their characters.

This is why Ramlila of Gazipur is called Chalman Ramlila. A 60-foot Ravana burns in the plains of Lanka. Apart from this, Khar-Dushan, Kumbhakaran, Jatayu Kachap, Kagdo and other effigies are also burnt. These figurines are being made by Chhote Lal Prajapati.

Ramlila will start from September 28

This time Ramlila will start from September 28. Its first stage – Ramjanam which will be held at Harishankar Mohalla Ram Chabutare. A Shree Ram Kewat Samvad has been organized on October 3 at Pahad Thakar Pokhre. Bharat will arrive at Bhardwaj Ashram on October 5, Jayant Netra Bhang Mata Anusuya Samvad will be held in King Shambhunath’s garden on October 6.

Surpanala nose cutting, Khar Dushan Vadh and Sita Haran will be organized on October 8 in Lanka Maidan. Bal Sugriva Vihat will be organized on 10th October. On October 12, the Ram Ravana war will take place. Returning to Ayodhya on 14th October will be planned on 19th October on Ram Chabootra.
