West Bengal: Traders’ strike continues, Mamata Banerjee calls for stop of potato exports to other states

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has taken a big decision on Tuesday considering the increase in potato prices. The CM has ordered officials to temporarily ban the export of potatoes till prices are brought under control. Giving information, a senior official said that this decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Banerjee.

Indeed, the Mamata government has taken this step amid an indefinite strike by the Progressive Potato Traders Association against the government. The official said that during the Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister gave strict instructions that potatoes should not be exported to other states until the prices come down. There should be no crisis in potato supply.

Traders went on strike to protest the harassment

Potato traders in West Bengal have called for an indefinite strike against alleged interference by the state government and local administrations in exporting potatoes to other states. The strike has started from Sunday. After potato prices in the state rose and became expensive, traders alleged that the authorities were illegally detaining potato trucks in neighboring states.

Increase in the price of potatoes

Potato prices had already gone up. Due to the strike, the prices increased further. Potatoes are being sold at Rs 36 to 40 per kg depending on the size and variety. Meanwhile, a senior official said that there is no response from the government yet, so the strike will continue.

Meanwhile, the cabinet has also approved a seven-member committee headed by a retired Calcutta High Court judge to review the three new criminal laws, the official said.
