TRAI’s action
In a massive action against spam calls and unregistered telemarketing companies, 2.75 lakh phone numbers have been disconnected and services of 50 companies have been suspended. This action was taken under the strict stance taken by telecom regulator TRAI recently. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had asked telecom companies to blacklist unregistered telemarketing companies and block their numbers.

TRAI said in a statement issued on Tuesday that it has noticed a significant increase in fake calls. More than 7.9 lakh complaints were filed against unregistered telemarketing companies in the first half of the year 2024. TRAI said that to curb this, strict instructions have been issued to all access providers on August 13, 2024 and they have been asked to immediately curb unregistered telemarketing companies.

More than 50 companies on the blacklist
TRAI said that keeping these directions in mind, telecom companies have taken strict action against misuse of telecom resources for spoofed calls. They have blacklisted over 50 companies and blocked over 2.75 lakh SIP DIDs/mobile numbers/telecom resources. These measures are expected to reduce spoofed calls and provide relief to consumers. TRAI has urged all stakeholders to contribute towards a cleaner and more efficient telecom ecosystem.
