Martyr’s Memorial built in Mohammadabad Taluka of Ghazipur
In the year 1942, the freedom movement was at its peak. Mahatma Gandhi gave the slogan of do or die in Mumbai. In this regard, he was scheduled to address a rally there on August 8. Meanwhile, the British arrested many big leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel. As soon as this news reached Bali, people got angry. This anger was seen not only in Ballia but also in Mohammadabad in the neighboring district of Ghazipur. On one hand in Ballia on August 19, Chittu Pandey removed the DM of Ballia and hoisted the tricolor at the collector’s office, on the other hand in Mohammedabad also Lalita’s son Shivpoojan Rai, Shreeshwar Rai, Vamsh Narayan Rai. Rai, Vashishtha Narayan Rai, Raghupati Rai’s son Vamsnarayan Rai, Narayan Rai, Rajdayal Rai, Rambadan Upadhyay etc. warriors captured the tehsil and freed it from the British.
At the call of Gandhiji, on 11 August 1942, the enthusiastic youth of Sherpur village in Mohammadabad tehsil area joined the movement. According to local people, on the morning of 18 August 1942, Dr. Thousands of people led by Shivpujan Rai reached Mohammadabad tehsil to hoist the flag. The English Tehsildar tried to stop them, but when he failed, he opened fire. 8 militants were martyred one after the other in this firing and finally the rest of the militants captured the tehsil. One of these fighters, Sitaram Rai, was given the status of a living martyr.
The British thought him dead and threw him into the river.
In fact, the British thought him dead and threw him into the river, even though he was still breathing. Since independence, he has been participating in August 18 events for a long time. However, out of these 8 martyrs, photos of only these 2 martyrs Shivpujan Rai and Vanshnarayan Rai are available till date. His statue is installed in Shaheed Park. As there are no photographs of the remaining six, the public only knows their names. The tehsil building occupied by the militants and hoisted the tricolor, continued till 1992 in the tehsil building.

The Tehsil Building became a Martyr’s Memorial in 1992
However, when former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi visited here in 1980 and was told the story of this tehsil building, he immediately ordered to shift the tehsil somewhere else and declare the building as a martyr’s memorial. Finally, after the formation of the new tehsil, in the year 1992, the then Governor Motilal Bora inaugurated this Shaheed Bhawan. However, later this Shaheed Bhavan became a victim of neglect and now its tiles are also falling. At present, the library is being run in two rooms of this Shaheed Bhavan.
