In the last one month, the price of tomato in Delhi has increased by Rs 37 per kg. On the other hand, if we talk about the average price across the country, it has increased by over Rs 18. These conditions are only for the government prices, which are issued by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. If measured by street prices, tomato prices in Delhi have crossed the Rs 90 to Rs 100 per kg mark.

To give relief to the common people, the central government has announced that it will sell tomatoes at Rs 60 per kg. Its responsibility has been given to the National Consumer Cooperative Federation of India i.e. NCCF. NCCF will start selling tomatoes at preferential rates from its centres from July 29. To ease the rising prices of tomatoes, the National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India (NCCF) will start selling tomatoes at a preferential price of Rs 60 per kg in the National Capital Region-Delhi from Monday. The move comes at a time when tomato prices have shot up due to supply disruptions due to recent rains in the producing centres. NCCF said in the statement that this facility will start from July 29, 2024 and will be gradually expanded to other locations in Delhi-NCR in the coming days.

According to data from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, retail tomato prices in Delhi stood at Rs 77 per kg on July 27, but prices have crossed Rs 90-100 per kg in some areas, depending on the quality and locality. If we look at the government data, tomato prices increased by Rs 37 per kg in the month of July itself. On June 30, government tomato prices in Delhi were Rs 40 per kg, which is Rs 10 per kg lower than onion prices. While on Saturday, onion prices stood at just Rs 50. On the other hand, if we talk about the average prices across the country, an increase of Rs 18.20 per kg has been observed in tomato prices. The average price on June 30 was Rs 50.82 per kg.
Where to get cheap tomatoes
The union said the subsidised tomatoes will be made available at various locations including Krishi Bhawan, CGO Complex, Lodhi Colony, Hauz Khas, Sansad Marg, INA Market and various areas of Noida, Rohini and Gurugram. The aim of this initiative is to stabilise the market and provide adequate cost relief to consumers. NCCF said this intervention underlines the government’s efforts to mitigate the impact of rising food prices on consumers.
