In 2022, the telecommunications regulator published a consultation document suggesting ways to implement this system. The regulator finalized recommendations for network providers such as Reliance Jio, Vodafone-Idea and Airtel after receiving inputs from stakeholders and engaging with telecom companies for almost a year.

According to TRAI, network providers across the country will have to use the name recognition provided by telephone customers in their customer application form (CAF). Under this system, all service providers will have to provide this service to customers if they request it. In short, the system suggests that the name used when purchasing the SIM card will be visible to the other person while making a call. Additionally, for companies requiring a higher number of connections, TRAI will also give them the option of displaying the preferred name instead of the name appearing on the customer’s application form. That means the name of that company can be displayed.
