The Ministry of Labour and Employment on Tuesday said it has initiated the process of providing Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) benefits to economically weaker workers. The ministry said in the statement that it has asked state governments to include migrant workers, construction workers, beedi workers, cine workers, non-coal mine workers, contract workers and other unorganised workers under the PMAY.
This decision was taken after the Union Cabinet approved the proposal to extend the implementation of PMAY from FY 2024-25 to FY 2028-29. Through this, a target has been set to provide two crore additional houses to eligible beneficiaries. Emphasis has been laid on meeting the housing needs of economically weaker workers in this initiative.
social justice issue
According to the labour ministry, these workers represent the underprivileged section of the society and bringing them under the purview of the Prime Minister Awas Yojana is a matter of social justice as well as an important step towards improving their standard of living. The ministry said that the Management Information System (MIS) portal launched on August 21, 2024 for construction and migrant workers is now fully operational.
