The Modi government seems to be gearing up to bring about a revolution in the electric vehicle sector. The government has already talked about promoting electric vehicles. Now the government may soon give the green signal to the Fame-3 scheme. Union Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy on Wednesday said that the government will finalise the third phase of its flagship electric transport adoption scheme, FAME, in a month or two. He said that an inter-ministerial group is analysing the suggestions received for this scheme. Along with this, efforts are also being made to resolve the issues faced in the first two phases of the scheme related to rapid adoption and manufacturing of (hybrid and) electric vehicles (FAME).
What is the government’s plan?
FAME-3 will replace the Temporary Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) by 2024. The duration of this scheme ends in September. Kumaraswamy said that many suggestions will come on FAME-3 on how to remove the shortcomings that were there in FAME-1 and FAME-2. We are working on it. Even the Prime Minister’s Office has given some suggestions. Our inter-ministerial group is working on it.
When asked about the timeline for finalising FAME-3, the minister said that I think the work will be completed in one or two months. When asked if the FAME-3 proposal would be sent to the Union Cabinet for approval in one or two months, the minister said that many suggestions are still to come. We have to look at all of them… whatever is the most correct and positive way, we have to take decisions accordingly.

The government said this
Asked about the unsold stocks lying with motor vehicle dealers and companies, Kumaraswamy said he had received several requests from the motor vehicle industry. He said we are trying our best to strengthen the industry. The minister responded to these questions while talking to reporters on the sidelines of an ASSOCHAM programme here.
