The construction of ‘Malwa Canal’ in Punjab will help irrigate nearly two lakh acres of land in the state, ushering in a new era of unprecedented growth and progress. It is proposed to construct a canal on the left side of the Rajasthan Feeder Canal from Harike headworks to its headworks to Waring Kheda village and for its construction a part of the canal will also be constructed on Rajasthan State Government land.

This canal, taken up by the Rajasthan feeder, will provide an additional source of water to the left side of the Rajasthan feeder canal, which cannot be adequately supplied by the Sirhind feeder canal. The 149.53 km long canal has a proposed capacity of 2000 cusecs and was constructed at a cost of Rs. It will be done at a cost of 2300 crores.

The construction of the Malwa Canal is very important for the state as the demand from the Ferozepur feeder is high during the monsoon season, the overall demand of Punjab cannot be met and consequently the supply from the Sirhind feeder is also affected. The situation becomes so critical that Punjab has to operate its canals on rotation. Sirhind Feeder Road. There are 302 lift pumps running between 7100 and 430080, which irrigate the area to the left of the Rajasthan feeder, which was initially irrigated by the Sirhind Canal system (Abohar Branch Upper and Bathinda Branch) from the Roper Head Works.

However, instead of improving the water supply in the tail section of the Sirhind Canal system, the then government decided to supply water to the area through lift pumps from the Sirhind feeder. Hence, there is shortage of water for canal supply of Abohar and Fazilka.

As a long-term solution to improve irrigation facilities, the Punjab government has decided to construct another canal ‘Malwa Canal’ similar to Rajasthan Feeder and Sirhind Feeder. With this, Abohar area will get more water from Sirhind feeder. With the construction of this canal, the areas of Muktasar, Giddarbaha, Bathinda, Zira as well as Abohar, Ferozepur and Fazilka will get their share of water.
