The protesting doctors demanded the resignation of the state’s health secretary and director of health education (DHE) and said they would also take out a rally to Swasthya Bhawan, the health department’s headquarters in Salt Lake, this afternoon.
Doctors will continue the movement
A protesting doctor said after the meeting that our demands were not met and the deceased did not get justice. We will continue our agitation and will not return to work. We want the Health Secretary and DHE to resign. We will take out a rally to Swasthya Bhawan this afternoon. Junior doctors have not returned to work for the past one month.
Notice to return to work
Earlier, the Supreme Court had on Monday directed the doctors to return to work immediately, saying that the protest cannot be at the expense of duty. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra directed the protesting doctors to return to work by 5 pm on Tuesday and assured them that no adverse action would be taken against them if they return to work.
Doctor killed after rape
A trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was allegedly raped and murdered. There is a national level protest over this incident. The dead body of the female doctor was found in the seminar hall on August 9. The Kolkata Police arrested an accused in the case the next day.
