The government has given good news for those who travel on the state and national highways. According to the information provided by the government, now the 20-kilometer journey on the highway will be completely free. This facility will be available for those passengers who use GPS in their vehicles. This means that Fastag will also no longer be required for such passengers. Let us also tell you what kind of notification has been issued by the government.

Travel free up to 20 kilometers

Owners of private vehicles equipped with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) will not be charged any fee for travelling up to 20 kilometres daily on motorways and expressways. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Tuesday issued a notification to amend the National Road Fees (Determination of Tariff and Collection) Rules, 2008. As per the new rules notified as National Road Fees (Determination of Tariff and Collection) Amendment Rules, 2024, the vehicle owner will be charged a fee on the total distance travelled only if the distance travelled is more than 20 kilometres on roads and expressways.

The notification said that the driver, owner or person in charge of any vehicle other than vehicles with national permit, using the same stretch of a national highway, permanent bridge, bypass or tunnel, will not be required to pay any fine under the GNSS-based user fee collection system. Under this system, no fee will be charged for a journey of 20 kilometres in each direction in a day.

The Road Transport Ministry had announced in July that it has decided to implement satellite-based toll collection system on select national highways on a pilot basis as an additional feature along with Fastag. A pilot study on the GNSS-based user fee collection system was conducted on the Bengaluru-Mysore section of NH-275 in Karnataka and the Panipat-Hisar section of NH-709 in Haryana.
