Lawrence D’Souza said, “We went to Rajshri for the trial of ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’. Then Mara, S. A special screening was organized for the three of us, Ramanathan and Prayagaraj. When I watched the movie, I didn’t enjoy it at first, but as the movie progressed, I started liking Salman in the movie. After watching the movie S. Ramanathan told me, ‘Lawrence, let’s sign Salman, call him. So I called Salman at Raj Babbar’s office in Juhu. We gave Salman a signing amount of Rs 5000. S Ramanath was supposed to start the film, but he did not work on the project after paying Salman.

S Ramanathan has produced films like ‘Bombay to Goa’ (1972) and ‘Mahan’ (1983). Lawrence said, “After missing the opportunity to film with Salman for the first time, when Salman delivered another big hit, S. Lawrence talked about his 1991 hit film ‘Saajan’, which starred Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt in pivotal roles. He said that he was paid Rs 8 lakh for the film, while Salman and Madhuri were paid Rs 11 lakh each and Sanjay Rs 12 lakh.

Lawrence said that when he was making films in the 1980s and 1990s, there was not much money in the industry. Talking about the advice he got from Salman, he said, “I used to make films to help my producer friends, some of them were poor, so I wanted to help them and I also made films with some new actors. But Salman once told me, ‘Don’t do all this now. You have made ‘Saajan’, now you have to do even better. I’m an emotional person, I wanted to help people and that’s why I didn’t earn much in this industry.
