Vasantrao Chavan
Senior Maharashtra Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP from Nanded Vasantrao Chavan passed away on Monday. Vasant Chavan is undergoing treatment at KIMS hospital in Hyderabad and his health suddenly deteriorated in the middle of the night and he breathed his last at around 4 am. He won the Nanded Lok Sabha seat in the last Lok Sabha elections and Ashok Chavan joined the BJP.
BJP’s current Rajya Sabha MP and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan contested from Nanded seat. Even after he joined the BJP, the Congress party managed to win the Nanded seat. Vasantrao Chavan campaigned despite his illness and managed to win.
Political career of late MP Vasant Chavan
Vasant Chavan became the Sarpanch of his village for the first time in 1978. After this he also worked in Zilla Parishad. In the year 2002, he was elected as a member of the Zilla Parishad, but soon after that he got an opportunity in the State Legislative Council. From there he worked in both houses of the Legislative Assembly for 16 years. He made great educational expansion in Naigaon through an organization called Education Society. After the formation of Naigaon assembly in Nanded district in 2009, Chavan became the first MLA from this constituency. He joined the Congress in 2014 and was appointed to the Public Accounts Committee of the Legislative Assembly in May 2014. After which he was elected as MP from Nanded Lok Sabha.

Recently Ashok Chavan joined BJP, after which BJP sent him to Rajya Sabha. After former chief minister Ashok Chavan joined the BJP, the Congress party made Vasantrao its candidate from Nanded. There was talk in political circles that the BJP would easily win the Nanded seat due to Ashok Chavan’s support, but the voters decided otherwise. Vasantrao Chavan of Congress has given a big defeat to Pratap Chikhlikar of BJP and has sent a message that the influence of Congress in the district has not decreased after the departure of Ashok Chavan.
