Cases of child marriage are rapidly coming to light in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district. Here people marry off their daughters when they are minors, when child marriage is a bad practice in the society. He does not do this under any pressure. He does so out of compulsion. Since April 2024, the team of the District Child Protection Unit has prevented 20 such marriages.

Sonbhadra district is a tribal dominated area and the practice of child marriage is still alive here. People here get their sisters and daughters married at a young age. He does this under no pressure, rather he does it to avoid the stigma of society. It has been observed for some time now. The incidence of runaway girls around the age of 15 to 17 is increasing rapidly in the tribal society, causing humiliation to the society. To avoid this stigma, people get girls married off at a young age.

38 cases of child marriage in 2023

Lack of awareness and education is the main reason behind increasing cases of child marriage. Most of the people in the district belong to the tribal community. There is a lot of lack of awareness and propagation of education in this society. A resident of Dudhi area says that her sister fell in love with a young man. That is why we were getting married, but on getting the information, the child protection team not only stopped the marriage but also sent the minor girl to Nari Niketan. In 2021, the department received seven cases of child marriage. 15 cases were reported in 2022. This figure will increase to 38 in 2023.

What did the head of child protection say?

Amit Chandel, chairman of the Child Protection Unit, says that child marriage is a social and legal crime. Under the sponsorship scheme, the government will provide boys and girls freed from child marriage Rs. 4000 as assistance. Amit Chandel says girls are saved when child marriages are reported. The rescued girls are sent to girls’ homes. After the investigation is completed, the girls are handed over to their families.
