Haryana Assembly Election 2024
Political parties have fielded their respective commanders to win the political battle of Haryana assembly elections. There are half a dozen such political families in state politics, around which Haryana politics is centered. These political families have been dominating various areas of the state for a long time and they do not want to let it slip out of their grip under any circumstances. This time in the assembly elections, the third generation in some political families and some fourth generation have come to try their luck in the elections?
Grandsons of four former chief ministers of the state have contested the elections. Apart from this, the families of former ministers, MPs and MLAs are also trying their luck in the assembly elections. The fourth generation of Chaudhary Sir Chhotu Ram and Chaudhary Devilal family have contested assembly elections, while not former CM Bhajan Lal, Chaudhary Bansilal and Rao Birendra Singh, but the third generation of Rao Abhay Singh, Shamsher Singh Surjewala and Chaudhary Taib Hussain have contested. He contested the election this time too. Thus, the 2024 election has become a launching pad for the leaders of Haryana’s political families.
The third generation of the Surjewala family
Congress has fielded National General Secretary Randeep Surjewala’s son Aditya Surjewala as its candidate from Kaithal assembly seat. Thus the third generation of the Surjewala family has entered politics. Randeep Surjewala’s father Shamsher Surjewala was the first Agriculture and Cooperation Minister of Haryana. Shamsher Surjewala became an MLA for the first time in 1967. After this he became MLA in 1977, 1982, 1991 and 2005 and MP in 1993. After this, Randeep Surjewala took over his father’s political legacy and became an MLA in the 1993 by-election.

Now Aditya Surjewala
Randeep Surjewala contested six elections in 1996, 2000, 2005, 2009, 2014 and 2019, in which he registered historic victories by defeating former CM Om Prakash Chautala in 1996 and 2005. He was a minister in the Hooda government in 2005 and 2009, but lost the election in 2019. Surjewala is a member of the Rajya Sabha and was seeking a ticket for the assembly elections, but instead of giving him a ticket, the party has fielded his son Aditya Surjewala as its candidate. If Aditya succeeds in winning the elections, he will continue the political legacy of his grandfather and father.
Devilal’s third to fourth generation in politics
Chaudhary Devilal was considered a stalwart in Haryana politics, having made the journey from CM to Deputy PM of the country. This time eight members of Devilal family are trying their luck in the election field. Former CM Omprakash Chautala, who carried on Devi Lal’s political legacy, may not be contesting, but his brother, son and grandson have also set the tone for the election. Devi Lal’s son Ranjit Chautala is contesting from Rania seat while Om Prakash Chautala’s political heir Abhay Chautala is trying his luck from Allenabad seat. Arjun Chautala, grandson of Om Prakash Chautala and son of Abhay Chautala, has contested against Ranjit from the Rania seat. This is Arjun’s first election when he has entered the electoral fray.
Chautala family in politics
Aditya Chautala, son of Devilal’s younger son Jagdish Chautala, is facing Devilal’s grandson Digvijay Chautala, who is contesting from the Dabwali assembly seat on an INLD ticket. Amit Sihag is also trying his luck from this seat. Sihag is the nephew of Om Prakash Chautala and Digvijay Chautala is his grandson. This seat has been the traditional seat of the Chautala family. Former Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala is contesting from Uchana seat. Om Prakash Chautala’s son Ajay Chautala’s son Dushyant Chautala, Ravi Chautala’s wife Sunaina Chautala, Om Prakash Chautala’s brother Pratap Chautala’s son Pratap Chautala are contesting from Fatehabad seat. This time Dushyant Chautala, Digvijay and Arjun Chautala from Devi Lal’s fourth generation have contested the election.
The political entry of the third generation of Bansilals
This time, the third generation of former Haryana Chief Minister Chaudhary Bansilal is contesting the Tosham seat. Kiran Chaudhary, wife of Bansilal’s son Surendra Singh, is a Rajya Sabha MP from the BJP. In such a situation, BJP has made Kiran Chaudhary’s daughter Shruti Chaudhary a candidate from Tosham seat. Congress has made Anirudh Chaudhary, son of Bansi Lal’s second son Ranbir Mahendra, its candidate for this seat. Shruti has been an MP before while Anirudh is contesting assembly elections for the first time. Thus there is competition between brother and sister on the Tosham seat. Shruti is the granddaughter of former CM Bansilal and Anirudh is the grandson. This is also being called a battle for Bansilal’s political legacy.
Second and third generation of Bhajanlal
The third political leader of Haryana is Bhajanlal, who has been the Chief Minister. Chaudhary Bhajanlal started his political career as a Panch in Gram Panchayat, he was elected as MLA 9 times. His son Chandramohan Bishnoi has been the Deputy CM of the state while his second son Kuldeep Bishnoi has also been a Lok Sabha MP and MLA. His wife Renuka Bishnoi was an MLA from Hansi. This time, two members from the Bhajanlal family have contested the assembly elections. Bhajan Lal’s grandson and Kuldeep Bishnoi’s son Bhavya Bishnoi is contesting from Adampur seat on BJP ticket. Congress has made Bhajanlal’s second son Chandramohan its candidate from Panchkula. Thus the second and third generation of Bhajanlal are trying their luck in the election field.
Brijesh Chaudhary, descendant of Sir Chhotu Ram
The political descendant of the farmers’ messiah Sir Chhotu Ram is Chaudhary Birendra Singh, his grandson. Has been a minister in Congress and BJP governments. Birendra Singh has also been an MLA and MP for five times. Chaudhary Birendra’s son Brajendra Singh became MP from Hisar seat in 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Birendra’s wife Premalata has been an MLA from Uchana Kalan, but lost to Dushyant Chautala in the last assembly elections. This time Congress has given ticket to Brajendra Singh from Uchana Kalan. Thus, Brijendra Chaudhary comes from the fourth generation of Sir Chhotu Ram.
The beginning of the third generation of the Rao family
Former Haryana CM Rao Birendra Singh’s son Rao Indrajit is a minister in the Modi government at the Centre. Rao Indrajit is considered a seasoned player in South Haryana politics. This time Aarti Rao, the daughter of Rao Indrajit, the third generation of Rao Birendra, has contested the assembly elections. Rao Indrajit is a Lok Sabha MP from Gurugram and a minister in the Modi government and now his daughter Aarti Rao is contesting from the Ateli assembly seat. Similarly, the third generation of Rao Abhay Singh, who has firmly established his influence in South Haryana politics, is also in politics. Congress has again fielded Chiranjeev Singh Yadav, grandson of Rao Abhay Singh and son of Captain Ajay Yadav, from the Rewari seat. Thus the third generation of the Rao family has entered politics.
Third generation of Chaudhry Taib Hussain
The third generation of Chaudhary Taib Hussain, who was the strongest face of Mewat politics, has this time contested the assembly elections. Tahir Hussain has been MLA and MP many times. After Taib, Zakir Hussain emerged as his political heir and became a three-time MLA. In 2019, he contested from Ferozepur Zhirka on a BJP ticket but did not win. This time the BJP did not give him a ticket, so Zaheer Hussain’s son Tahir Hussain joined the INLD and set the tone for the election.
The third generation of the Hooda family
Freedom fighter Ranbir Hooda, father of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupendra Singh Hooda for ten years, won the Rohtak seat for the first time after independence. He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the second time and was also an MLA and later became an MP in the Rajya Sabha. Bhupendra Hooda has been an MP four times and an MLA five times. Bhupendra Hooda’s son Dipendra Hooda has won the Lok Sabha elections four times. Bhupendra Singh Hooda is once again in the election fray. Hudda is related to Chhotu Ram family. Chaudhary Birendra Singh is his relative.
Political Families of Haryana
Congress party has fielded Balram Dangi who is the son of former MLA Anand Singh Dangi from Mehem seat. Similarly, Congress has given a ticket to the sitting MLA Neeraj Sharma from Faridabad seat. Neeraj Sharma’s father Pandit Shivcharan Lal Sharma became an independent MLA from this seat in 2009. Congress candidate from Gannaur seat, Kuldeep Sharma’s father Chiranjeelal has been a four-time Lok Sabha MP, Kuldeep Sharma has also been the speaker of the Haryana Legislative Assembly. Similarly, BJP has fielded Shakti Rani Sharma, wife of former Union Minister Vinod Sharma and mother of Rajya Sabha member Kartikeya Sharma, from Kalka assembly seat.
In Haryana politics, the Congress party has given ticket to former agriculture minister Paramveer Singh, son of Harpal Singh, who hails from the Punjabi community, from Tohana. Paramveer Singh has been MLA from Tohana. His father Harpal Singh has been a five-time MLA from Tohana. He has also been an MP from Kurukshetra Lok Sabha seat. He has also once held the charge of Haryana Congress state president. BJP has given ticket to Sonepat MP Kishan Singh Sangwan’s son Pradeep Sangwan from Baroda assembly seat, Harinder Singh Ramratan son of former MLA Ramratan has got BJP ticket from Hodal. Former minister Kartar Singh Bhadana’s son Manmohan Singh Bhadana is contesting from the seat opposite. Similarly, former Cooperation Minister Satpal Sangwan’s son Sunil Sangwan is the BJP candidate from Charkhi Dadri.
