Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant batted tremendously in the Chennai Test match. Both shared a partnership of 167 runs against Bangladesh. Pant became a source of trouble for Gill during this partnership and was to suffer huge losses. Gill kept his bat away from him to avoid it. In fact Shubman Gill came for the press conference after the third day’s play was over. Meanwhile, he revealed that he was playing with an old bat in the second innings. Pant frequently punched his bat during their partnership. Gill feared that Pant’s punch would break his bat.
Pant said this after getting angry
On the third day, Shubman Gill started the game with 33 runs and Rishabh Pant with 12 runs. Both played the first few overs cautiously, then after making eye contact, they started attacking. Gill said that the boundaries were not being hit during this time, but Pant was coming close to him and punching the bat. Seeing this he got angry and finally told him, ‘Calm down brother.’ Let us tell you that Pant was dismissed after making 109 runs. Gill also played an unbeaten innings of 119 runs. Based on this brilliant innings of both, Team India got a total lead of 514 runs.
Where did you get the inspiration for the century?
Shubman Gill scored his fifth Test century during the second innings in Chennai. During the press conference after the third day’s play, he revealed where he got the inspiration for this. Gill said that batting at number 3 has been beneficial for him.
Batting in this position during England’s Test series instilled confidence in him. However, in the first innings against Bangladesh, he got out without opening his account. But he was very unhappy with the way he got out and it inspired him to play longer in the second innings, which led to him scoring a century.
Gill’s innings is in discussion
Shubman Gill’s century is in discussion. The reason behind this is his success in the second innings. In fact, in any Test match it is not considered easy for a team to bat in the second innings i.e. during the third or fourth innings of that match. Especially in the Indian subcontinent during this time the pitch starts to break and the ball spins making it difficult to play.
Gill, on the other hand, has fared better in the second innings than the first innings so far. He has scored 867 runs at an average of 51 batting 22 times in the second innings in his Test career. Which includes 3 centuries and 4 half centuries.
