Principal Sandeep Ghosh resigned 4 days after the rape case in the hospital
Kolkata’s government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital is in the news for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. Sandeep Ghosh, under pressure from all sides amid constant protests after the rape case and repeated complaints by junior doctors about the principal, finally resigned from his post on Monday. His resignation came 4 days after the incident. While leaving, Sandeep again got into controversy by taking the victim’s name several times.
Principal Sandeep Ghosh, who has been in the news since his appointment, repeatedly took the victim’s real name during his address after resigning today. The junior doctors were demanding the resignation of the principal for failing to provide adequate security to the hospital staff. Ghosh’s resignation comes a day after the Mamata Banerjee government removed the hospital’s medical superintendent-cum-vice-principal Sanjay Vashishth. In place of Sanjay Vashishth, Dean of Student Affairs Professor Bulbul Mukhopadhyay was given the additional charge of Medical Superintendent.
Principal Sandeep Ghosh denied the allegations leveled by the junior doctors and said he would never tolerate false allegations. He has fully cooperated in every way including handing over the CCTV footage to the police. He said, “I cannot bear this humiliation anymore. All the allegations leveled against me are false and fabricated. The students were agitated and there was an agitation to remove me from the post. There is a political conspiracy behind all this.

Who is Sandeep Ghosh?
Sandeep Ghosh became the principal of the medical college for the first time in mid-2021. Ghosh was made Principal of RG Kar Medical College for the first time. Prior to this, he worked as MSVP (Medical Superintendent cum Vice-Principal, MSVP) of two medical colleges.
Sandeep Ghosh is an orthopedic surgeon. Before becoming Principal, Ghosh was the MSVP of Murshidabad Medical College and National Medical College. But after the rape case came to light, he went to Swasthya Bhawan on Monday and submitted his resignation.
Deep connection with disputes
There was an incident last March in which the court called for a report on several corruption charges against Sandeep Ghosh. Several allegations of corruption were leveled against him, including rigging tenders. A complaint was also registered in his name at Tala Police Station. Earlier, former Deputy Superintendent of RG Car Hospital Akhtar Ali had alleged corruption in the tender.
During Ghosh’s tenure, there were also allegations that medical waste worth crores of RG Kar Hospital was smuggled to Bangladesh. When a private company was contracted to collect the waste. The agency later complained that it was not getting much medical waste from hospitals. This includes used saline bottles, wires, syringes and gloves etc.
Even after the dispute, no further progress was made
For the first time in his career, Sandeep Ghosh became the principal of a major government hospital in the state. He could not be moved to become a principal. Guidelines were issued by Swasthaya Bhawan and the name of the new principal was also announced. But Sandeep Ghosh has not been removed yet.
Trinamool leader and former MP Sandeep Ghosh’s conflict also came to the fore. Shantanu Sen was the president of RG Kar Rogi Kalyan Sangh. He tried hard to remove Sandeep Ghosh from the chair, but the principal did not budge. Later Shantanu himself resigned from his post.
