There are many ways to serve society. Everyone serves the society according to his own thinking. But the story of Patna’s Vishal Jeet Singh Rathore is completely different. Indeed, Vishal Jeet Singh Rathore decided to polish his boots in 2021 to raise awareness about cancer and help cancer patients. Since then, he polishes boots at different places in the city on a fixed day every week. Instead, it spends the proceeds on cancer patients.
Vishal Jeet Singh Rathore is the Operations Chief in the Social Welfare Department, Government of Bihar. His story is an inspiration to those who truly want to give something to the world. Vishal says that when he was employed in the social welfare department, there were two days off in a week, Saturday and Sunday. I was going to the hospital then. Where I saw that some people were in need, who needed medicine, food or other essentials, but there was no one to help such people. Then I thought that I want to help such people. After this I started helping people.
Cancer is on the rise in Bihar’s Panchgachia area
Apart from this, I had read somewhere that there are about 10-15 villages in Panchgachia area of Saharsa district, where the number of cancer patients is increasing, says Vishal. Why is this happening? No one can understand this. Teams from several media organizations also went there. Doctors of IGIMS also went there and asked why this is happening? But there was no result. All of them were very poor people and without treatment they were facing many problems.

Salary is spent in service of people
The news shook me. From then on I decided that to meet my small needs I would do something that would not only earn me some money but also draw people’s attention to my work and create awareness about cancer. After this thought of mine, I used to spend most of the salary from the government to help such people, says Vishal.
People used to say different things when asking for money
I thought if I go to someone to help cancer patients I don’t know how people will take it? Because most people look at each other with suspicion when they ask for money. Then I decided I didn’t want more money. I just want enough money to meet the basic needs of cancer patients. He says that when he went to ask people for money, they used to talk differently.
People advised to form an NGO
Some people even advised me to form an NGO. There were some people in my own circle of friends who would say, Hey man, what are you talking about? He didn’t like it. But my thinking was that I didn’t care if anyone thought it was good or bad. My sole aim was to distribute whatever amount I collect through this medium to cancer awareness and cancer patients. I didn’t want to take donations from anyone, because people look at me differently after taking donations. My mind was clear that I don’t want to do any business.
Decided to polish the boot
Vishal says, after this I decided that I will polish the boots. The only aim was that the person who does the work of polishing boots is seen by the common eye, but I thought that if I do boot polishing, I will also earn some money, and when people look at my work, out of curiosity, I will tell them about cancer. I can also make you aware about it. After this I started going to places like universities, corporate offices, airports.
People gave money according to their will
I was talking to the officials there before going there. I never asked anyone to polish my boots. It depends on his wish how much money he gives me. After this, the process started and gradually it became a milestone. Vishal says, When I was polishing the boots, there were different reactions from the people present at the place.
Ever since childhood, I wanted to serve people
Some sensitive people were saying that you are doing very well. But there were many people who were saying what are you doing all this? This is all for show. Vishal says, I had a desire to help common people since childhood, but from 2021 I decided to do boot polishing. Vishal says that when I used to polish boots, I used to earn one to one and a half thousand rupees a day. After this, I was trying to fulfill the minor needs of cancer patients.
Some people held hands while helping
For this I would go to the hospital and see who was most in need and what they needed and with that amount I would buy those things and give them away. Vishal says that my experience was also totally different. Because after helping some people would get so emotional that they would hold my hand. He used to say that no one serves us but you serve us.
These sentiments of such people gave me more motivation that I want to work for them further. Vishal says, I had to go outside Patna for some time for some very important work. Now I am again in Patna and I am going to start this series again. Vishal Jeet Singh Rathore not only polishes boots but also selflessly donates food to cancer patients. In this, priority is given to those patients who are older and suffering from cancer.
Provide food
Vishal says I can’t buy medicines for cancer patients. Because of this there are two things, firstly that their medicines are expensive. Secondly, these patients are also helped at the government level. But if someone comes to me and says I need 20 or 25 thousand, I will take the initiative to help that person. Vishal not only polishes boots but also takes care of elderly people who have no family. He says that his family has always supported him in this work.
Vishal wants to build a hospital
Vishal says, I want all the rich people of the society to be sensitive towards such people. Because we all are part of this society. Inspirational messages are sent to everyone’s mobile every morning and evening, people read and forward them. It is only an exchange, but only then does the service actually take place. When you step forward to help someone. My only wish in life is to build a hospital and dedicate it to the needy people.
