Rape and murder of medical student sparks uproar in Bengal, doctors’ strike collapses health system, official alleges

After the rape of a female junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal, the case of murder has heated up. Even on the third day of the incident, the demonstration and strike of the junior doctors continues. Due to which the health system has collapsed. On the other hand, the state health department in-charge of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Dr. Sanjay Vashisht has been removed. Dean Bulbul Mukhopadhyay has been assigned the new responsibility.

On the other hand, the junior doctors of the emergency department of the hospital also went on strike on Sunday. All departments except emergency services were on strike since last Friday. The agitators have announced a strike on Sunday as emergency services have been disrupted for the past two days. The agitating doctors have said that they will continue the strike until their demands are met. Because of this, the patient service of the hospital has been questioned.

Junior doctors on strike for 3 days

After the body of a woman doctor was found at RG Kar Hospital on Friday, medical services almost came to a standstill due to protests by junior doctors. Patients and their families who came from far away had to face hardships. Although the emergency services were functioning initially, they started facing problems from Saturday. After this, the emergency services were also on strike on Sunday. However, according to hospital sources, it cannot be said that the emergency services will be completely shut down as the junior doctors have announced a strike.

Increase hospital security

In the current situation, police security has been increased by RG Car Hospital. Strict security at the entrance. No outside ‘undesirables’ are allowed to enter. It is mandatory to show your card for entry. On Sunday, RG Kar held a press conference on behalf of the Resident Doctors Association and demanded four points. The junior doctors said that the agitation will continue till their demands are met. They will stop working.

The protesting doctors made this demand

The protesters demanded arrest of the accused, judicial inquiry against him based on proper evidence and death penalty. Apart from this, the representatives of the agitating doctors should also be given detailed information about the evidence found against the accused in the CCTV footage and the post-mortem report. The principal of the hospital, the superintendent of the hospital, the head of the department of chest and lung medicine and the police officer on duty at the interim police station of RG Kar Medical College have to submit their resignations in writing. Adequate financial assistance should be announced immediately to the family of the deceased and written information should be given regularly about the progress of the investigation.

Police have arrested one accused

Police have arrested a civic volunteer in this case. They produced him in court and took him into their custody for 14 days. Police sources claim that the accused has confessed to the crime. He will be severely punished. Meanwhile, Chief Minister and State Police Minister Mamata Banerjee has also supported giving maximum punishment to the accused.
