Cyclone Asna News: A severe depression caused heavy rains and flooding in Gujarat on Friday. At the same time, it has now turned into Cyclone ‘Asana’ over Kutch coast and nearby Pakistani territory. This is the first cyclonic storm to hit the Arabian Sea in the month of August since 1976. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has given this information.

Pakistan has named this cyclone ‘Asana’. According to the IMD, only three cyclones have occurred in the Arabian Sea during August between 1891 and 2023, including the years 1976, 1964 and 1944. The 1976 cyclone originated from Odisha, moved west-northwestward and entered the Arabian Sea. However, it weakened in the northwestern Arabian Sea off the coast of Oman.

Cyclonic storm ‘Asana’ is moving towards west

At the same time, the cyclone in the year 1944 took a terrible form after originating in the Arabian Sea. In the year 1964, another short-lived cyclone developed off the coast of South Gujarat and weakened along the coast. At present, the ‘Avadab’ formed in the vicinity of Kutch has increased its speed and moved towards the west.

A deep depression formed around the coast of Kutch and Pakistan and Northeast Arabian Sea moved westward at a speed of six kilometers per hour during the last six hours. which turned into a cyclonic storm ‘asna’ (pronounced as-). The cyclonic storm again centered over the same area, 190 km west-northwest of Bhuj (Gujarat) at 11:30 am.

It will continue to rise in the Arabian Sea off the Indian coast for two days.

It will continue to move roughly West-Northwest over the Northeast Arabian Sea off the Indian coast for the next two days. A deep depression is a low pressure situation, with wind speed between 52 kmph to 61 kmph, while in a cyclone, the wind speed is between 63 kmph to 87 kmph. That is, the high pressure condition is the condition prior to the formation of a cyclone.

For a low pressure system to develop into a cyclone, the sea surface temperature must be 27 degrees Celsius or higher. Currently, the sea surface temperature in the Bay of Bengal is 28-30 degrees Celsius. In the Arabian Sea it is around 27-28 degrees Celsius.
