Farmers demonstration in Malerkotla.
Clashes broke out between farmers and the Punjab Police over land acquisition for the Jammu-Katra Expressway in Malerkotla, Punjab. Farmers belonging to farmers’ organization Bharatiya Kisan Union (UGRAN) broke the police barricades, following which clashes broke out between policemen and farmers.
The administration here on Tuesday acquired the land for the Jammu-Katra Expressway. Following this, on Wednesday, members of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Acquisition) came to protest and said that the administration will not be allowed to acquire land forcibly. Farmers have alleged that NHAI has given farmers’ land prices far below the market price.
Farmers have started a protest after the Punjab Haryana High Court’s comments on land acquisition. A front has been opened by farmers’ organization Bharatiya Kisan Union in Malerkotla. The farmers union says that they will not be allowed to occupy the land without the consent of the farmers.

Compensation is being lied to
Farmer leader Kewal Singh has said that his protest is against land acquisition without compensation. They demand that the administration should compensate them first. The police administration is pushing and torturing the farmers. Farmers want to move only to acquired land.
The farmer leader has said that the government is giving money to those who do not have land. Farmers who do not have land do not get money. Owner farmers cannot get compensation due to paperwork. This is the case of farmers of 3 villages which the administration is not solving.
The High Court commented
The Punjab Haryana High Court has made a big comment while hearing NHAI’s plea regarding land acquisition for construction of expressway. Showing strictness on the state government, the court has asked the farmers to acquire NHAI land and hand it over. The court has asked to use the police if necessary. For this, the High Court has given 2 weeks time to the Secretary to the Government of Punjab.
