With the conclusion of the ten-day Ganesh festival, many cities including Bengaluru, Delhi and Pune have banned the sale of liquor on certain dates. The move is aimed at ensuring public peace and safety during Ganesh Visarjan and related processions. The ban on liquor sale in these cities started from September 14. Liquor ban in Bengaluru
Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B. Dayanand has temporarily banned the sale of liquor in various areas of the city from September 14 to 16. This restriction will apply to bars, restaurants, wine shops, pubs and Mysore Sales International Limited (MSIL) establishments. A Deccan Herald report said that other establishments with CL-4 (club) and CL-6A (star hotel) licences have been exempted from this ban. For east and northeast Bengaluru, the sale of liquor is banned for 24 hours at a stretch from 6 am today to 6 am on Monday (September 16).
Eight police stations, including Commercial Street, Bharti Nagar, Shivajinagar and Pulakeshinagar, have jurisdiction. Meanwhile, liquor sales have been banned in north and east Bengaluru from 6 am on Saturday to 6 am on Sunday (September 15). During this period, liquor sales were not allowed in seven areas, including JC Nagar, RT Nagar, Hebbal, Sanjay Nagar, DJ Halli and Bharati Nagar.

Ban in Hyderabad too
The Hyderabad City Police has also announced closure of all liquor shops, toddy shops and bars in Hyderabad and Secunderabad on September 17 and 18. This decision by Commissioner of Police CV Anand is aimed at ensuring public safety during the last immersion of Ganesh idol in the city. This restriction will be in effect from 6 am to 6 pm on September 17. However, on September 18, bars in hotels and clubs registered under Section 20 of the Telangana Excise Act, 1968 will remain open. Station House Officers (SHOs) and additional inspectors of local law enforcement agencies have been authorised to take legal action against those violating the order.
No liquor will be sold even in Pune
According to a report in the Hindustan Times, the Pune district collector had imposed a complete ban on liquor consumption in some areas of the district from September 7 to 18. The sale of liquor has been banned in the areas of Farskhana, Vishrambagh and Kharak police stations. The Ganesh Chaturthi festival began on September 7. The ten-day festival will end with Ganesh Visarjan on September 17, which is celebrated as Anant Chaturdashi or Anant Chaudas on the same day.
