Patna IGIMS Eye Institute: Bihar has got a big gift in health sector. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Union Health Minister JP Nadda inaugurated the newly constructed Eye Institute at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences campus on Friday. This new unit has been built at a cost of Rs 188 crore. After the inauguration, the Chief Minister inspected the newly constructed Regional Eye Institute. Meanwhile, he went to the first floor and got information about the arrangement of OPD, ward area, operation theater room, general ward.
In a program organized at IGIMS, the Chief Minister and the Union Health Minister remotely distributed Rs. Also inaugurated and laid foundation stones of various projects costing 850 crores. On this occasion, the Chief Minister said that Regional Eye Institute has been inaugurated today in Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences Campus. Union Health Minister JP Nadda has come on this occasion, I congratulate and welcome him. IGIMS was established in the year 1984.
Now free medicines and tests have been arranged here – Chief Minister
CM Nitish Kumar said that initially the organization was functioning properly but after a few years the system here began to deteriorate. After coming into government in 2005, we gave full attention to the reform of this institution. Modern arrangements were made for the treatment of people. A large number of doctors were deployed. An eye bank and a modern kidney transplant unit were established, a cardiac center was built for heart patients. A State Cancer Institute was established.
He said that I am happy that in this context the Regional Institute of Eyes is being inaugurated today in the campus of IGIMS. Apart from this, buildings and facilities in health institutions are being inaugurated and foundation stones laid. It also includes the recently constructed Health University building. All these cost 850 crore rupees. Earlier IGIMS had to pay some amount for medicines and tests. But now free medicines and tests are arranged here.
Next year the number of beds will exceed three thousand
The Chief Minister said that earlier the number of beds in IGIMS was 770. Then we decided to increase 2,500 more beds here. It is being worked on rapidly due to which the number of beds has now increased to one thousand 370. Also, the work of 500 beds will be completed by the end of this year. The construction of 1200 bed super specialty hospital will be completed by next year. In this way, the number of beds here will exceed three thousand.
The CM also said that when we came to government in 2005, the condition of the health system was bad. There was a shortage of doctors in government hospitals. Hospitals lacked medicines and other facilities. Only 39 patients were coming for treatment every month in the primary health centres. That is, one or two patients came every day. From the year 2006, provision of free medicines to patients was started in hospitals, for which the then Vice President Bhairo Singh Shekhawat came to Patna to inaugurate. He said that now on an average more than 11 thousand patients are reaching the primary health center every month.
Proposal to build medical college and hospital in 9 districts
The Chief Minister said that earlier there were only 6 government medical colleges and hospitals in the state. Due to its scarcity, students from here used to go outside the state to study in medical colleges. Due to shortage of doctors, people here used to go outside the state for treatment. The government constructed new medical colleges in the state. Due to which now the number of medical colleges has increased from six to 11. Besides this, 15 more new medical colleges are being built. The central government is getting support in the construction of eight medical colleges and hospitals.
He said that apart from this, there is a proposal to build medical colleges and hospitals in nine districts. Patna Medical College and Hospital is being made modern and world class with a capacity of five thousand 462 beds. The number of beds is also being increased in all old medical colleges and hospitals. Apart from this, Nalanda Medical College and Hospital, Patna, Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital, Darbhanga, Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital, Muzaffarpur, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital, Bhagalpur and Anugrah Narayan Medical College and Hospital, Gaya have also been given. Medical facilities with 2500 beds are being developed as colleges and hospitals.
Land marked for construction of Darbhanga AIIMS
The Chief Minister said that in the year 2003, during the time of the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, approval was given for the construction of AIIMS in Patna. Today it has become quite good. Patients are getting good treatment here. Apart from this, another AIIMS in Darbhanga was sanctioned by the Central Government in the year 2015. Its construction is starting soon. He said, ‘I am happy that Union Health Minister JP Nadda Darbhanga is going to see the land marked for AIIMS. I thank him for that. 150 acres of land has been identified for construction of AIIMS in Darbhanga.

The Chief Minister also said that it is a matter of great pleasure that JP Nadda has come to Bihar, for this I thank him. He was born here. He has an old relationship with Bihar. We will be happy if they keep coming to Bihar. His father lived here. Whenever we go to Delhi, we always meet them. In the program booklets published by the Health Department and various medical related books published in Hindi were inaugurated by the Chief Minister and the Union Health Minister.
