After this, the government launched new 2000 and 500 rupee notes. New 500 rupee notes are currently in circulation, while 2,000 rupee notes have been withdrawn. In this regard, the Reserve Bank of India says that there are only 2 percent Rs 2,000 notes that have not yet been returned to the banks.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Tuesday that 98 percent of Rs 2,000 notes have been returned. Only 7,117 crore notes that were withdrawn from circulation are still in the possession of the people. The RBI had announced that it would withdraw banknotes worth Rs 2,000 from circulation on May 19, 2023.

The Rs 2,000 notes were worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore.

When the RBI removed Rs 2,000 notes from circulation on May 19, 2023, their total value was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. It was reduced to Rs 7,117 crore on September 30, 2024. The central bank said in its statement that in this way, 98 percent of the Rs 2,000 notes in circulation until May 19, 2023 have been returned to the bank .

When the Central Bank removed Rs 2,000 notes from circulation, it gave people the chance to deposit them at any nearby bank branch until October 7, 2023. After this, people were given the chance to exchange notes through 19 regional offices and posts of RBI.

The facility to redeem the demonetised Rs 2,000 note is also available at 19 regional offices of the Reserve Bank from May 19, 2023. However, after October 9, 2023, the rush to exchange notes has increased by these offices. Since then, 2,000 rupee notes have also been accepted for deposit in popular bank accounts.

People are also sending Rs 2,000 notes to RBI offices through Indian Post within the country. This money is deposited into your bank account. The work of deposit/exchange of bank notes is done at the RBI regional office. These offices are in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
