According to government data, the average price of onion in Delhi has seen an increase of Rs 3 in the month of September. If we talk about the average prices of the entire country, then only one and a half percent increase has been observed. How much has the country’s average price increased?

According to data compiled by the Department of Consumer Affairs, the average price of onion across India on Tuesday was Rs 49.98 per kg, while the prevailing price is Rs 50 per kg. What is special is that in the month of September, the average price of onion has seen an increase of one and a half rupees per kg. On the last trading day of August, the price of onion stood at Rs 48.47 per kg. As of September 10, the average price of onion in the country reached Rs 49.98 per kg.

3 rupee hike in Delhi

If we talk about the average prices in Delhi, there has been an increase of Rs 3 in the last 10 days. According to data from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the price of onion on August 31 was Rs 55 per kg. It reached Rs 58 per kg in the month of September 10. If experts are to be believed, further increases in its prices are possible in the coming days. According to government data, the maximum price of onion is Rs 80 per kg, while the minimum price is Rs 27 per kg.

The rise in onion prices in Delhi is being seen at a time when the central government had started retail sale of onion to consumers in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai at a concessional price of Rs 35 per kg through its agencies on September 5. NCCF and NAFED are carrying out retail sales through their centres and mobile vans.

Increase in production

Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare last week said the outlook for onion availability and prices in the coming months remains positive. The area sown to onion in the Kharif season rose sharply to 2.9 lakh hectares last month, while it was 1.94 lakh hectares in the same period last year. Khare had said that there is still around 38 lakh tonnes of onion stock available for farmers and traders.
