Tobacco addiction will be treated at Delhi AIIMS
Now the patients of tobacco addiction will also be treated at Delhi-based AIIMS. For this a ‘Tobacco Cessation Clinic’ (TCC) has been opened at RK OPD, AIIMS New Delhi. TCC Clinic in New Delhi will start functioning smoothly from 10th September. Under this, lung medicine will also be available to patients only in OPD.
The initiative aims to address the significant public health challenge posed by tobacco use in India. With its establishment, the clinic will increase public awareness. It will also provide necessary medical and psychological support to tobacco addicted patients. Tobacco use is a leading preventable cause of death globally.
Tobacco causes 1.3 million deaths in the country every year
The use of tobacco in the country and the world is increasing day by day. Along with this, the number of his patients is also increasing. Tobacco use causes more than 8 million deaths every year. In India alone, more than 1.3 million people die every year due to tobacco consumption.
According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey 2 (GATS-2), 28.6% of Indian adults aged 15 and above use some form of tobacco. GATS is the global standard for monitoring tobacco use among adults. It collects data related to tobacco use in countries.
The clinic will help patients quit smoking
At the same time, individual counselling, group sessions and educational materials like booklets will be available at the Tobacco Cessation Clinic at AIIMS Delhi. Apart from this, brochures and handouts will also be distributed for public awareness. The clinic will also have digital tools available, including text messaging. It will help patients to quit smoking. At AIIMS Delhi, this facility will be available in Room No. 519 and 526, Fifth Floor of RK OPD Building.
