Ayushman Bharat coverage limit may be doubled, gift may be available in budget

The budget countdown has begun. In this budget, the focus of the government may be on healthcare. There may be a big announcement in the budget for around 17 crore people of the country. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman may announce doubling the coverage limit of the Modi government’s Ayushman Bharat scheme. With this, poor families can avail free treatment up to Rs 10 lakh. In this regard, talks are underway between senior officials and the government.

Under the scheme, free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh is currently available. The proposal to double it has reached the government. It is believed that in the budget to be presented on July 23, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman may give a big gift to around 17 crore people of the country by increasing the coverage limit.

The coverage limit may be doubled

Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, currently around 12 crore families in the country are getting free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh in government and private hospitals. The government believes that in view of the rising treatment expenses, its coverage should also be increased. In such a situation, this coverage can be increased from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh in the budget 2024. Earlier, President Draupadi Murmu had included all citizens above the age of 70 years under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.

Expenses will increase a lot.

Doubling the coverage of the Ayushman Bharat scheme will also increase expenditure. The National Health Authority estimates that increasing the coverage to 10 lakh will put an additional burden of Rs 12,076 crore on the scheme. However, in the interim budget presented on February 1, an allocation of Rs 7,200 crore was made for the scheme, of which the scheme is estimated to include an expenditure of Rs 12,000 crore and with the addition of about Rs 19,000 crore.

Currently, around 12 crore families across the country have been connected under the Ayushman scheme. Also, as per the President’s announcement, all citizens above the age of 70 years will be included under it. With this, the number of beneficiaries will increase by 4-5 crore. This means that the total beneficiaries of the scheme will reach around 17 crore in the coming times.

Due to this the limit may increase

In view of the rising inflation and treatment expenses, a proposal was made to the government to increase the coverage of this scheme. It was said that the scheme also covers treatments like cancer and transplants, the cost of which is quite high. Therefore, the coverage available under the scheme should be increased.
