The IPL Governing Council has announced the retention policy for the mega auction to be held before IPL 2025. This time IPL will see many big changes. Many big decisions were taken at the IPL Governing Council meeting on Saturday, September 28. The Right to Match card has also returned to the auction. But the rules for using the Right to Match card have been changed, which will benefit the players a lot.
How will the Right to Match card be used?
All teams can retain a maximum of 6 players before IPL 2025, which will include a Right to Match card. A franchise can retain a maximum of five capped players (Indian/Foreign) and a maximum of two uncapped players. If teams retain 6 players before the auction they will not have RTM cards in the auction.
At the same time, if the franchise retains five players it will have a right to match card. So that when it comes to the auction, he can make one of his current players part of it. That means, the fewer players a franchise retains, the more right-to-match cards it will have, which it can use in the auction.
Changes in the rules for using Right to Match cards
The IPL Governing Council has also changed the rules for using the Right to Match Card, which will directly benefit the players. Previously, teams used right-to-match cards by agreeing to match the highest bid placed on a player in the auction and reinstate the player to their team. But now on the use of right to match card the highest bidding team will also be given a chance, that team can raise the bid one more time, if the opposite team still uses the right to match card then the player will get their wish.
For example, if Ishan Kishan is being auctioned and CSK bids the highest for him at Rs. 6 crore bid, Mumbai Indians (Ishan’s current franchise) will first be asked if they want to use their RTM. If Mumbai India agrees, CSK will be given another chance to raise the bid and make the final bid. If CSK now increases it to Rs. 10 crores, then MI can use their RTM and pay Ishan Rs. Can re-sign for 10 crores.
