The mirror images of politics are never stable. The picture is constantly changing. What we understand changes. In the clock of politics, the creation and destruction of the image is like destiny. This destiny clock sometimes strikes 1, sometimes 6, sometimes 12.

Rahul Gandhi does not wear glasses now. But the first image of him in people’s mind is of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi’s funeral. A small boy wearing glasses is standing near Indira Gandhi’s body. The frame changes, the glasses remain. Rahul Gandhi is wearing glasses even while standing near Rajiv Gandhi’s body. Rahul was then looking at the world through these glasses. Rahul’s face is his. It has glasses. The loss is personal. The world is personal. Nothing is political, only the people around are so political.

Rahul Gandhi

Then Rahul is the Rahul of the late 90s. He is asking for votes for his mother. People saw the future Indira Gandhi in sister Priyanka Gandhi and narrow-mindedness in Rahul’s politics. It was with this narrow-mindedness that Rahul Gandhi stepped into the political arena. Lack of Hindi, discomfort in the crowd, lack of understanding and lack of quick decision making. But Rahul became the face in road shows. In 2004, he became the Congress candidate from Amethi. Fighting from Amethi was the easiest. Rahul also won. By 2014, the chariot of victory was running. He was elected MP from Amethi thrice.

During this time, the family and the party gave him the responsibility of NSUI in 2007. He was also given the responsibility of the post of party general secretary. As per the recommendation of Lingdoh, Rahul did many experiments in the student union, but unfortunately he could not succeed. As general secretary, he remembers one thing. That is tearing the ordinance of the Manmohan government. This was a decision to save public representatives from punishment. But by tearing this ordinance, Rahul destroyed the image of Manmohan Singh in public life.

The smell of legacy

After the leadership of Narasimha Rao and Sitaram Kesari, the leadership of Congress was now in the hands of Sonia Gandhi. Under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi, Congress enjoyed power for 10 years. But the same Congress now does not consider Rahul Gandhi as its successor. Comments started being made on Rahul Gandhi’s working style. Questions were raised on Rahul’s ability. It was discussed that Rahul Gandhi does not take politics seriously. Anna Hazare’s movement started and the opposition completed the rest. The opposition used social media extensively. Rahul Gandhi’s image was tarnished. Rahul Gandhi became a subject of ridicule on social media.

On the other hand, Rahul Gandhi was struggling inside and outside the party to establish his own style of politics. During this time, the Congress remained sluggish. There were no workers on the ground and many leaders were sitting at the helm. This old guard made it difficult for Rahul to do politics. After the party’s defeat in 2014, Rahul started trying to build a new Congress. But continuous defeats, Modi’s charisma and continuous failed reforms put Rahul Gandhi in even more trouble. Some leaders even defected. Some said that sometimes people like Sonia Gandhi and sometimes Priyanka Gandhi and kept opposing Rahul.

During Rahul’s time, it was a problem for Pappu and for the opposition for the party. In 2013, Rahul Gandhi became the party’s vice-president and later became the Congress president in 2017. However, the 2019 defeat paved the way for rebellion. Rahul Gandhi resigned from the party president’s post and went to the KP Bhawan. He also lost the Amethi seat. A split in the Congress was now at the doorstep.

There are many faces. Kapil Sibal, Anand Sharma, Manish Tiwari, Sandeep Dixit, Ghulam Nabi Azad, RPN Singh, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Jitin Prasad, Captain Amarinder Singh, Virendra Singh, Ashwani Kumar, SM Krishna, Ashok Chavan…these people were freed from the party and rebelled. The experiment of Rahul Gandhi did not work in the elections as well. People did not agree. Congress and Rahul kept getting weaker.

India visit and social justice

Bharat Jodo Yatra became an important milestone in Rahul Gandhi’s political journey. Till now Rahul was wearing glasses. But now the time has come to remove the glasses. Not from the eyes, but from the vision. Coming out of the old framework, Rahul started looking at the country, society and people from a new perspective. This journey changed his perception towards the country and the country’s perception towards him. For the first time people felt that this young man wearing a white T-shirt was doing something. People saw honesty in this untidy and overgrown beard. The negative narrative that was created about Rahul started fading.

Social justice became the second big mantra. Rahul made the rights and interests of women, backward classes, Dalits, minorities, tribals and the poor his language. Rahul’s narrative is now a pro-people narrative. Rahul attacked corporates. He speaks the language of empowered change, not begging. Questions about political corruption. Boosters prepare manifestos for the economically weak. There is a big word in all this, which is caste injustice, protection of the Constitution and prevention of attack on reservation.

A large section of the country is connected to this story. Due to the ease that comes from this relativity, people gradually connect with Rahul as well. This is not happening just like that. For some time now, Rahul Gandhi and Congress have been getting Muslim votes. While big Dalit leaders are seen surrendering, this largest section of the country is showing faith in Rahul Gandhi’s leadership. They feel that Rahul Gandhi will do something. At a time when claims are being made to move forward without getting stuck in castes, Rahul Gandhi has taken up the torch of social justice by keeping caste in mind.

Rahul in 2024

After the Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi appeared before the people in a new role. The glasses are gone. The dust has settled. The opposition in the party has either surrendered or has lost its last chance by losing the elections. The indispensable faces from the time of the parents have now gone into oblivion. Many hereditary families have become impotent or even crippled. Now Rahul’s ideology is the ideology of the Congress. Rahul’s thinking is the narrative of the Congress. Now everything revolves around Rahul.

Today’s Congress is Rahul’s Congress. Rahul’s people are now managing the Congress organization. The old managers are now only there for meetings. Gradually the crowd there will also reduce. New faces are strengthening their position in the party. These new faces have emerged in the state. Their representation has also increased in the central committee. Now Rahul Gandhi is united in the Congress. He seems to be moving forward by abandoning the old thread.

This will be the first election in 15 years where the words Rahul and Pappu will not be used together. The opposition and opposition parties have failed to understand that Rahul Gandhi is no longer Pappu and if he is ignored like this, then losses are certain. The number of people listening to Rahul on social media has increased. This time the advertisements of Congress on TV were better than BJP. The trolling that Rahul Gandhi had to face through old interview reels till the first election, this time the media was deprived of Rahul Gandhi’s interview. In this way Rahul kept the media deprived and also gave a strong message.

Rahul has a big role in the public opinion of Uttar Pradesh. It was not easy to bring Dalits to the Samajwadi Party. The PDA formula was a panacea for Akhilesh Yadav, but it was Rahul who bridged it. While the story of the Constitution and reservation became an issue among Dalits, the biggest challenge was to transfer Dalit votes to the Samajwadi Party. Rahul made it easy.

Uttar Pradesh has seen a division of Muslim votes in the last ten years. This vote bank, divided between the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party, had turned its back on the Congress. Sensing this mood, Akhilesh Yadav restarted the failed experiment of SP and Congress in early 2024. Therefore, Muslim votes went to this alliance. Muslims supported the SP. Because the Congress stood firmly with the Samajwadi Party.

Today Congress has become strong again. NDA has got a clear majority, but there too the balance of power is visible. In the coming times, Congress will stand as a strong opposition party. Rahul will be their hero. It is not that Rahul does not face challenges and there is no dearth of them. But there must be an ideal in politics. We should look beyond the prism of politics. It is important to see far. It is also important to keep looking. The shop of love is now open and is waiting for new customers.
