When did ‘Reclaim the Night’ start?
The women’s liberation movement called Reclaim the Night was launched in 1977 in Leeds by ‘Reclaiming the Night’. As protests erupted across England over the murder of a woman, police advised women not to leave their homes at night. Right in front of him came the call to ‘reclaim the night’. This movement continued throughout England until the 1990s. Later, the organization organizes national-level protests against rape and atrocities against women every year.
But the inspiration for ‘Reclaim the Night’ came from anti-women protests across America in the 1970s. In 1975, a woman was raped and murdered on her way home from work in Philadelphia. Another woman was murdered in San Francisco in 1978. After this, a women’s support organization called for this movement.
