West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been repeatedly accused of Muslim appeasement by the BJP. BJP had also used the same propaganda in the recently held Lok Sabha elections. However, Mamata defeated the BJP in West Bengal and denied the allegations of appeasing Muslims. Therefore, her spirits seem to be high. Now to answer the BJP’s move, Mamata Banerjee has started Hindutva politics. However, BJP is afraid of losing its Hindu vote bank due to this move of Mamata Didi.

Jagannath Dham located on the Digha coast of East Medinipur district is the dream project of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She laid the foundation of this temple in 2019. At that time she had claimed that the same crowd would gather here as the Jagannath temple in Puri. She had said that due to the beach, tourists can enjoy all the facilities like Puri here.

The West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (WBHIDCO) has constructed this temple at a cost of Rs 143 crore. The temple complex is spread over about 22 acres on the beach adjacent to the new Digha railway station. The designing and interior work of the temple has been done by a Kolkata-based design studio. The temple has been developed as Jagannath Dham as a replica of the Lord Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha.

According to state government sources, the Jagannath temple is completely ready. But due to the Lok Sabha elections, the date of inauguration could not be decided. The green signal from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is awaited. Bengali Hindu families have had deep faith in Lord Jagannath since Chaitanya Mahaprabhu came to the Jagannath temple in Puri in the 12th century. The Rath Yatra festival is celebrated with great pomp every year in West Bengal. It has been told that Chief Minister Banerjee will inaugurate this temple during the Rath Yatra festival. The Rath Yatra festival is starting from July 7. It is likely that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee may inaugurate the newly built Jagannath Dham temple on the first day of the festival.

This is not the first time that Mamata Banerjee is riding the Hindutva chariot. Earlier also she had implemented many schemes to reach out to the followers of Hinduism. In 2020, she launched a monthly allowance scheme of Rs 1000 and free housing scheme for 8000 poor Brahmin priests. Apart from this, for the last several years, she had given financial assistance and subsidy in electricity charges to Durga Puja committees during Durga Puja.
