A new report has emerged on concerns over rising electricity consumption in India, in which there is news of relief. In fact, electricity consumption in the country declined by 4.7 percent year-on-year in August to 144.21 billion units. The main reason for this is above-normal rainfall across the country, due to which the use of home appliances such as air conditioners and desert refrigerators was reduced. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the country recorded 287.1 mm of rainfall in August, about 16 percent more than the normal of 248.1 mm. According to official data, electricity consumption in August 2023 was 151.32 billion units.

What does the report say?

Peak supply in one day also decreased to 216.68 GW in August 2024 (one gigawatt equals 1,000 MW), while in the same month of the previous year it was 236.29 GW. Peak electricity demand reached an all-time high of about 250 GW in May this year. The previous all-time high demand of 243.27 GW was recorded in September 2023.

This is the ministry’s estimate.

That same year, the Ministry of Energy estimated peak electricity demand at 235 GW during the day and 225 GW in the evening for May and 240 GW during the day and 235 GW in the evening for June. The ministry had also estimated that peak power demand this summer could reach 260 GW.

Experts said that due to above normal rainfall in the country, the use of home appliances such as air conditioners and desert refrigerators has been reduced due to which the overall electricity consumption has remained low. He said that due to the improvement in commercial and industrial consumption in the country with the onset of festivals, the consumption is likely to remain in line with the electricity demand in the coming days.
