Corporation started bulldozers in Varanasi
Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh witnessed a major action by the administration. Here, bulldozers were used on 76 dilapidated houses. These very dilapidated buildings were in the municipal records. All these buildings were in the danger zone, hence this action has been taken against them. These buildings can collapse at any time, these buildings were demolished before any disaster occurred. However, the building owners strongly opposed this action.
The Municipal Corporation team has initiated action on 76 buildings that fall under the category of extremely dilapidated buildings. It has been started from Piyari area of Varanasi. In 2014, the Municipal Corporation declared them very dilapidated and issued an eviction notice. While some people accepted the municipal corporation’s notice to vacate the buildings, there were many who did not vacate the buildings and were still living there.
The municipality initiated the action
The Municipal Corporation initiated proceedings under Section 334 of the Act 1959 to demolish the dilapidated building. Most of the people still living in the building are tenants. The Municipal Corporation has identified 489 dilapidated buildings in Chowk, Dasashwamedh and Kotwali zones of Banaras, out of which more than a hundred buildings fall under the extremely dilapidated category. The process of demolition has been started from today and the cost will also be recovered from the building owner by the Municipal Corporation. People living in these dilapidated buildings are demanding an alternative arrangement for themselves.
People strongly protested
The people say that they have a dispute with the building owner, so the proceedings should be stopped until the dispute is settled, but the municipality did not listen to them and started the process of demolition. A woman came and lay down in front of the bulldozer, while others also protested vehemently, but the bulldozer kept going at its speed. The bulldozer operation which started today will continue. People have been asked to follow the instructions and vacate these buildings, which fall under the category of very dilapidated houses, at the earliest.
