The python was eating the chicken
A farmer’s chickens were disappearing one after another in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Kiwi George, a farmer from Kasaragod, kept many chickens. One by one his chickens were disappearing. Seeing the missing chickens, the farmer tried to catch the thief every day. He could not understand which thief was stealing his chickens. The farmer’s hard work paid off and in 2022 he found the thief of his chickens, but the thief was such that he could not return his chickens himself.
Indeed, a giant python was making food for the farmer’s chickens. Seeing the python eating his chicken, the farmer called the forest department personnel to catch it. The farmer narrated his ordeal to the forest department officials and said that the python had eaten many of his chickens, causing damage. Forest department officials said that he can get compensation from the government for this loss, he can also apply for the same.
The government will compensate
Forest officials said that this rare reptile is ‘state protected’. Thus the farmer applied for compensation. The python is an animal that has been given the highest conservation status under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Even after applying, the farmer has not received compensation for a long time.
When no action was taken even after a year, a disgruntled George began to raise the issue further. The farmer expressed his anger at the minister. And said he did not get compensation. Later it was decided to approach the Kerala Human Rights Commission. However, before going to the commission, there was a call from the forest department regarding the compensation. 2000 was given to the government chickens that ate the pythons. Now the farmer is happy as he has received his compensation money.
