The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student union has agreed on some demands after a 15-day long hunger strike. Also a letter has been written to UGC to increase the remaining funds through JNU admission. On that JNUSU says this is our partial victory. A demand was made to increase the merit cum mean scholarship to Rs 5000 per month. So far, we are getting Rs 2000 per month. The JNU administration has written to the UGC and accepted this demand in principle.

Apart from this, the demands accepted include restoration of the old in-house entrance test system for admission, JNU entrance exam, conducting campus caste census, increase in scholarship amount and reducing the weightage given to the oral test for admission. Offers included. However, even after this, the student union did not end its hunger strike.

Accepted the demand for caste-based census

The student union said the JNU administration agreed to accept six of the 12 major demands of the students. It includes issues like reinstating the old system of JNU Entrance Examination (JNUEE) for admission of students, conducting caste-based enumeration in campuses, increasing scholarship amount and reducing the burden of oral examination during admission.

According to the student union, the administration had verbally agreed to accept these issues during the talks. Despite this agreement, the student union has continued its protest and president Dhananjay and counselor Nitish Kumar are on hunger strike, which has entered the 16th day today. Both want the administration to agree on the issues in writing.

Let us tell you that the hunger strike started on August 11. The students’ union said in a statement that Dhananjay’s weight had dropped by more than five kilograms and his ketone level had risen by more than four, indicating that the hunger strike was taking a serious toll on his kidneys. He is also jaundiced.

Nitish has also lost seven kilograms and is very emaciated. He has severe muscle pain. JNUSU has called for continuous hunger strike and night vigil to pressurize the administration on its demands.
