The Jammu and Kashmir government has issued an order to reduce the security cover of 57 people. But after the copy of this order went viral on social media, these people are worried that on one hand the government has reduced their security cover and on the other hand their personal information has also become public. In this case, the police have registered an FIR under the Official Secrets Act and started an investigation.

The protected persons whose security cover has been reduced include former ADG Police, former Div Com (IAS) officers, as well as some politicians and journalists on the police’s protected list.

A copy of the government order went viral

Protected persons such as a Srinagar resident IPS, ADGP rank officer, his retired IAS brother and former Divisional Commissioner Kashmir have been reduced or withdrawn by the Jammu and Kashmir administration. This decision of the government has caused concern among these protected people. Due to this order of the government which is going viral on social media, their anxiety has increased. Srinagar Police has now registered an FIR in this matter.

Life is insecure in Kashmir

These bureaucrats and politicians argue that their lives have become insecure in volatile Kashmir. Citing the decision of the State Level Committee (SLC) in March this year, the Srinagar Police has withdrawn 130 Personal Security Officers (PSOs) and residential guards of 57 VIPs. These include politicians, former police officers, retired judges and media personalities.

Quoting a communication from Police Headquarters, the order of SSP Srinagar said that in compliance with the decision taken by the State Level Committee (SLC) on March 30, 2024, the security cover with various protected persons has been withdrawn with immediate effect.

Withdrawal of CAPF and armed guards

The order issued on July 2 said that all zonal SSPs of Srinagar will ensure withdrawal of CAPF and armed guards from their respective jurisdictions. Similarly, DYSP DAR DPL Srinagar will immediately recall all PSOs and Guards. The protected persons also include 28 politicians from BJP, Upani Party, People’s Conference, National Conference, Congress and other smaller parties, five former judges and six retired police officers.

Security is not a matter of reputation or protocol

Junaid Mattoo, former mayor of Srinagar and youth president of Apni Party, says his security detail has been reduced during this latest exercise. Junaid said that I am a protected person of category Z as per the threat awareness exercise of Jammu and Kashmir Police and Security Grid, I understand that providing security is the domain of the security apparatus and have taken an informed and responsible decision. Safety is not a matter of reputation or protocol and is your threat perception and life and death in the hands of the Almighty.

Security plans and deployment leaks

He said, however, that it is very surprising to see that the security protocol, details and arrangements (including their residence) of each protected person are circulated on social media pages and media WhatsApp groups before any formal or informal communication is made. are protected persons. These are very sensitive details and this information should be kept confidential for security reasons, not for privacy and propriety reasons. This is my concern and objection. It is also worrying that security plans and deployments made at critical installations have been leaked. I hope there will be an internal investigation.

Keeping in view the concerns of the protected persons expressed to the Government, the Srinagar Police has taken action in the matter of the leaked copy of this Government Order and has initiated investigation by registering FIR No. 48/2024 in Shergarhi Police Station under official Secret Act.
